New to 911, transmission help??

Thanks in advance for any help. I am a muscle car guy but just got a 1974 911 2.7 targa from a friend of mine. Car has not run in a few years mostly because the transmission was out and he never had it fixed. He said he thought the Syncros were out, he was not able to get it into gears anymore. So started to take things apart (following the 911 motor drop tech article on this site), to drop the motor and tranny.
Side note, it's weird not taking a motor out from the top, but ill have to get used to that. Got to removing the clutch arm and the shift linkage coupler.

So first off the bushing in the coupler was gone, chunks in the rubber boot.
Second most of the articles talk about a helper spring on the clutch arm, mine does not have one. Just the arm and doesn't look like there is a space on the arm for even a simple spring.
1. should there be a spring on this model?
2. could the couple bushing being gone make the tranny not be able to catch gears?
If so, could be way cheaper than I thought to fix.
Any help or pictures would be great thanks
Tim

Post pictures of the helper arm and spring area.

Yes, the coupler bushing would have a direct impact on the ability to select gears. The PO may have ruined the syncros trying to drive it that way though.
Personally, I would try replacing the coupler bushings and adjusting it as per the Bentley manual and then try driving it before removing the power train. (If it runs)

Tim,

Here is the Porsche PDF file of diagrams and part numbers for your car.

If you go to the pdf file page 101 of 400 (not the Porsche numbering scheme) you can see the spring assembly. It's part number 21.

Also, you can open a menu on the left hand side to speed searches.

There is no helper spring before 77, just an arm with the cable attached.
The bushings in the swivel in the back seat are gone making it near impossible to hit a gear from the drivers seat. Dont try to rebush, just replace with a new unit, my preference is Stompski Racing design swivel.

Thanks guys, ok sounds good, worth trying, even if I have to refill with oil to see if it works. Way easier than dropping the motor and trans. Bruce thanks for that lead swivel looks awesome, might do that later though. Would be the nicest thing on the car now. I'll just go cheap rubber and see if it even works first. I'll be asking more question as I go. Here is a picture of the car, no rust anywhere as far as I've seen so far.

Pelican has a bushing kit for $22, to do the front and tunnel bushings as well, but I would go with the Delrin coupler bushing pieces they sell as they are working great in my car. Brass bushings are a good option as well.

Ordered those today, as well as a sump plate with a drain plug/gasket/plug. Pulling that plate every time seems dumb.

Welcome to Porschedom. What are your plans for the car? '74s are a good year. 2,7 motor with few of the emission controls that plagued the later 2,7s. Love the patina on the paint. Does the car have an owner's manual? If not you should get one, they have a lot of good detailed information. (I don't usually pull the plate when changing my oil)
