Painting outside of 911 gas tank

Anyone have a color code or paint that is a good match for OEM for the outside of an SC tank?

sorry don't have a paint code or anything

i researched this subject when i wanted to repaint my gas tank

it seems the gas tanks were only painted in the wurth underseal, basically the same textured stuff that you see under the fenders, the only difference being that they never added base coat on top

from new it was closer to a grey shade, although it discolors and becomes a browny grey

you can see a pic of the underside of my gas tank in the 'finished' section, if the (free) server is down, check back because it will get back online again

hope this helps

regards

andrew

On a '73.5 tank I wire brushed (rotary brass wire brush in air powered die grinder) off rust and any loose "rocker schultz" or "Stoneguard" including tank seam and lots of bottom scrapes. Then painted all external bare metal with "Corroless" rust conversion paint followed by a respray with Wurth SKS stonegard #890031 (grey). Probably as close to OEM as one can easily get.

stoneguard! thats the word i was trying to remember, the guy that did my tank used a special airgun that screwed onto the canister of this 'stoneguard'

apparently you can vary the texture, on the underside of the cars it was applied quite thick and 'ran' or 'curtained' a little, although on the tank it was a bit more grainy

Hi:
If you want to freshen up the tank surface that already has the pebbly-finish stonegaurd on it...
I used Bruning Silathane gloss enamel...Alkyd rust inhibitive system..cruiser gray 520-31 ( 1231).
