Problem identifying voltage regulator

I had an issue with my voltage regulator. After re-installing the rear panel in the engine compartment, which has many wires jammed into a very small, confined area....as soon as I turned on the ignition, the wires started smoking.

Fortunately, I caught it before too much damage was done but I'm going to have to replace a couple of wires.

I'm worried that I may have damaged the voltage regulator so I was planning on replacing it - this is the external type that is on my '74. The voltage regulator on the Pelican catalog looks entirely different than what is on my car.

Can anyone help me confirm that I should be buying the model below and that it will work. I've attached photos of the catalog version as well as what is in my car.

Vern,
I replaced my original Marchal VR which was a black metal box. I took it apart and inside it was a shiny work of art with little electromagnets, springs and switch bars. The replacement is black plastic and all solid state. Point is, they look totally different. Important part was that it had the same electrical hookup geometry.

I'm sure the solid state one our host sells should work fine. I'd only go for the mechanical Bosch one if you're doing a concours car.

The one you have pictured doesn't look like one for a '74 911

Ok, I had the wrong regulator. I found out that this one will work, albeit it is not the same mechanical regulator as the original.

Here is what I ordered:
