It looks straight but it's not really as it transistions smoothly. Wayner's looks like he's got some fine tuning to his which is awesome. |
If you look at the turbo and RSR flares in more detail, the biggest difference isn't the rounded edges on the RSR flare lips vs. the flatter edges on the turbo flare lips. Rather, the shape of the wheel opening is much different. In my opinion, the turbo flares are much more attractive.
On an RSR, the openings are not of a constant radius around the wheel axis. They have different curves in the front of the opening, the portion above the wheel and the rear. The fronts and rears are also completely different, in that the shape of the opening on the front is not the same as the opening on the rear. The front flares aften are not even centered on the wheel axis. If you look at the flares from the front or rear of the car, you'll also see that the flares taper in towards the body at the bottom more agressively. One last major point is that they are blended into the fenders with a smaller radius, when viewed from above. Frankly, a lot of the '73 RSR cars looked like crap. The '74 RS cars look a little nicer. The turbo flares are more refined. The curves are more consistent from the front half to the back half, with a smoother shape that is more tied to the center of the wheels. The fronts match the rears a great deal better. They are blended into the fenders with much larger radii. Nothing wrong with turbo flares on a hot rod... You don't get any points for originality, so why not have something that looks a little better? JR |

Right, like this the turbo prototype. Horrible looking openings indeed. And you're right, most that do the conversion or backdate however you want to call it, don't even think of duplicating the bad lines of the origional rsr openings and why would they? Unless you have one you wouldn't want to duplicate a mistake. Those Flare openings are mistakes that have been rectified with later models and even later racecars. Not many cars have that look and thats cool with me. If I saw one I would not hate it though as I love Porsche and Porsche history. You take the good with the bad:) |
Java and Quattro are right.
To my eye the original RSR flare appears like someone squashed a nice round flare by sitting on top of it. Quattro is also right though in that the turbo has a sharper edge along the face of the flare. On my car it has been massaged out because I actually hate that lip, and on newer cars especially the Koreans, that face of the flare looks to my eye like someone shaved off the face of a nice soft curve and made it flat. I can live with the flat face of a turbo flare compared to many of the new cars from other manufacturers. Having said that, I love the softer custom face of my massaged flares in comparison. I also welded in a 1/4 rod and trimmed back the inner lip. Agreed that the '74 RS/RSR flares look like a mistake. 930 flares are a massive improvement IMHO.
