1982 911 sc
Hey Guys,
New to the forums, here from Michigan. Just purchased my first (running & driving) Porsche, I found a deal right before winter that I just couldn't resist. Very excited to finally own a toy again! you can see the 1968 912 Targa in the background, (just sold her). i really want to get a Rennshift shifter in there to tighten up any play in the transmission, anyone using one? i just ordered new shifter bushing, figure i should start with the cheapest solution first. unfortunately a couple days after purchasing the car, one of the pistons in the front calipers blew out and gave me a project over last weekend. So, i bought two new calipers from our host, as that was the cheapest and easiest solution and bolted them up. the car did come with: carrera tensioner update turbo valve covers new fuel pump/fuel filter/ fuel accumulator momo hub and Prototipo wheels I'm thinking some H4 Euro headlights, a M&K muffler and some ssi's or headers. also, maybe some suspension upgrades (what's my best value for money?) any other major upgrades i should do first? she will be sitting all winter... here are some photos: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() i love being behind the wheel, too bad thats over this season! ![]() Enjoy! Hey Farrel... I'd change air, oil and fuel filters and drive it! Being down south, I tend to forget about the winter lay-away. Great snow pic. Best of fun to you next season with the new one.

Welcome from another Michigander!
Where are you at? We didn't get that much snow in Mid Michigan. Dig the 911 and the simplistic look. Enjoy it!

Looks like a great ride...I love my SC.
My personal advice would be to just drive the car as is until you really get to know it. Definitely go thru the maint items (shifter/coupler bushings, motor mounts, tie rods, shocks, etc.) so you can drive the car as it was meant to be driven (once the snow melts lol). Don't change anything major until you get a real feel for the 911....the different balance, the high rpm power band etc. If you go crazy now you may just waste money and undo a great deal later....Porsche made a pretty good product from the factory.

Really nice looking car Farrell.
I am like you, in Minnesota winter is already here, my SC is stored since too weeks and I am like a lion in a cage! Just turning around the car to know what would be the winter project! Your car looks already pretty well sorted. Might not need too much. |

Really liking the look of your car. I have an 80 SC and the first thing I did was order a Rennshift and has the 2" extension. I love it. It's still a little finicky going into 2nd, but is fantastic and like a centerpiece for the interior (no boot).
I too, I think, am sadly locking the car up for the winter. ![]() |

jealous of the rennshift! that looks so good and to top it off with the 917 shift knob, the exact combination I'm planning on going with! yeah mine seems to hate going into second in high RPMs. i bought bushings and will order the rennshift hopefully in the next month. cheers, TF |

Welcome to the crowd! Nice car, I am sure you will love driving and working on it every minute. First I would convert to Euro H4's with relay kits. Either the less expensive Hella H4 sealed beam replacements, or the original more streamlined European H4 headlights. I have done that on my '79SC a couple of years ago and was astonished by the much improved light output. And I only installed the 60/55W H4 light bulbs.

Furious jealousy in Ohio.
Please forgive Wayne. The proper way to end a question with a preposition, in proper mid-western dialect is "Where you at?" ![]() If the car has been driven, I would do as suggested re: fuel filter. If static for long (long) periods, maybe a look-see as to the tank contents? There is a plug in the bottom. 20-ish plus MM hex. Sea Foam can knock varnish off the walls, but of course with a full tank is best. Then how the heck do you drain without risking your life? Anyway. Just thoughts to chew on over the winter. My 81 was as clean as a whistle when I changed the basket filter thingie and o-ring on the tank plug about 10 years ago. In short, it was not necessary.

Congratulations and I love the color combination. I personally would go with all the upgrades that you have listed. H4's add a slightly modern look with significantly better lighting. I have a Monty with SSI's on my car, but I have heard the M&K is a good choice too. I'm not sure that I can recommend any suspension upgrades since I have Bilstein HD's currently on my car. Good luck!

Thanksgiving
Happy Thanksgiving !
With Thanksgiving yesterday, it was nice to have the day off of work to get some things done. I had a spare set of Fuchs laying around that i decided to do an RSR finish on, taping is the worst! Its been difficult to work on these with the winter here. So, I've been using a hairdryer on the wheels to warm them up, then take them outside and shoot them quick and bring them inside to dry. I really need a garage heater... Also, i was able to find some killer deals on Craigslist. Ill share those soon, stay tuned... For now, some photos of my work... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by Farrell; 11-28-2014 at 08:13 AM.. |

nice car!!
do a heater backdate. cleans things up, and allows easier access to things. unless your car has AC..then leave it. sweet job on the Fuchs..i guess you get skills while snowed in ![]()

Tom -
your car looks great, i never did know what color i had on my car since the original color was GP white and the guy i bought the car from did not know either as he did not paint it. i was definitely keeping an eye out for some Euro H4's and Toms car above proves how good they would look. Well, i was on the ole Craiglist inter webs this week when i came across a set of these bad boys! ![]() I couldn't believe it but i snagged em for $300! too bad my cars not red or the rings would mate up perfect! No worries though, just found a chrome set on eBay for $60, score! RSR wheel look? ![]() Anyways, today in southwest Michigan cooperated and we had blistering temperatures of 50*! I took advantage and went for a drive... ![]() Its Michigan, theres usually never sun this time of year, but as long as its warm, it works for me. Sure was fun, until i noticed that my oil level gauge started to hit red when under WOT during some spirited driving. i stopped to see if there was any issues, smoking, oil leak etc, then i let the car sit on a level surface and the level gauge said it was a little over half full. it usually looks like this when on the gas ![]() but after some spirited driving through corners it was looking like this ![]() When i slowed down and let the car cool a bit it was fine. Do i need to do an oil change and add more oil? Do i need a heavier weight oil? is this normal? Thanks Gents, TF Last edited by Farrell; 11-30-2014 at 12:24 PM.. |

Do not worry about the oil level gauge.
It is only used when the engine is warmed up and stopped and is not always accurate. Oil should level should be checked via dipstick for an accurate reading. Great job on the Fuchs ![]()
