Question about cam timing. (I think)
Hi,
I was at the Coronado Speed Festival in San Diego today, and was talking to a couple gentleman about their 3 liter motors. They both said they'd had a procedure done where the cam timing was set to zero (?) and it really opened up the power on their engines. I know nothing about this, but it sounded like a (relatively) inexpensive mod to get more power out of the stock 3 liter. I (clearly) don't know much about engine innards enough to speak about this. Is this a common hot rod modification? |
Basically, retarding the cam timing to move the power band to a higher engine speed. However, there is no free lunch. What is gained at higher rpms is reduced from where it was. Depends on the rpm range you mostly play at.
Should also have the correct engine specs to live with extended red lines to take advantage of the revised cam timing. Remember to compare apples to apples, not race to street-based engines. Sherwood |
