Intro - my 84 911

Hello All,

I recently became a 3.2 owner (only about a week ago). This is my first Porsche. I've wanted one since I was young and by dumb luck, managed to purchase one from a neighbor.

The po and his family used to build and race. The car I purchased from him was his last Porsche (having sold off all of his track cars). There have been a lot of modifications to this car, the extent of which is something I'm trying to determine. I do know that is has upgraded exhaust, 5000+- miles on a rebuilt motor, upgraded cam. I do not know the details of those items.

I've spent the last week getting acclimated to the car.. How it drives and such. Shifting has been a challenge for me and I've read posts on here by others who have similar troubles.

My first question - Is there anyone located near me (Southern NJ)? Or any events for older Porsches? I would love the opportunity to meet up and get a tour of someone's car who has owned one for awhile.

Looking forward to soaking up the collective knowledge of this forum.

Thanks,
George

Nice looking car! It does look like the previous owner had done a fair amount of modifications to the car. I do like the bumper replacements as they seem to modernize the car.

I'd suggest getting in touch with the local region of the Porsche Club of America, and you should find a lot of fellow enthusiasts. Many are now driving the newer cars, but you'll soon find the older cars as well.

Also, search through these forum topics and you should be able to answer just about any questions you may have. As a fellow '84 Carrera owner, I may suggest checking if the additional fuses have been added to the front condenser blower, footwell blowers, and instrument illumination lights as the '84 were not fused and can be a problem.

As for the shifting, it does take a bit of experience to get used to it, but it should not be too hard.

Welcome aboard. Nice looking car. Yeah, the car has been "modded", but based on the appearance of the engine bay and the PO's family history, my bet is they were likely done right.

Shifting you say? You likely got a 915 tranny in there. They are known for being...ahem...."fiddly". As long as it is not grinding on every upshift and creating strange smells, it is probably fine. Plenty of threads and somewhat easy tweaks for improving it are posted here. The search function can be a HUUUUGE time saver.

Welcome to the addiction.

Go to PCA.org is the national Porsche club. Find your local group and go to some local events. You will likely find some great folks.
