Thoughts on 911ST bumpers... fiberglass or modified steel
My '73 has steel ST flares from the previous owner's build. A build that had it looking like an '72 ST in the front and an RSR in the back. I am going to replace the rear deck lid and bumper to go with a total ST look.
Now the question... I can find plenty of out-of-the-box fiberglass rear ST bumpers. If I did this, it would be the only fiberglass piece on the car. In everyone's opinion does that "cheapen" the build? I have found a replica steel RS bumper, it is considerably more expensive (about 5x) and it would require modification to fit my car, ST flares are a little bigger (at least from what I have been told). Is this the better option? I appreciate everyone's input on this. |

A RS bumper is for a standard fender car. So you will have to have a metal guy make /modify extensions to meet the front flares. Steel? that is really unique as the real deal RS was always fiberglass in the front.
for the rear, you can go a long ways saving fabrication time, by sourcing a pair of 930 rear bumper extensions. these can be welded to the oe bumpers after some massaging to match the early bumper and the flare contours.

A fiberglass bumper in the rear gets rid of the weight where you least want it. OTOH, if you get hit in the back even at a low speed you will have little to no protection, or as my body man said, fiberglass is good for only 2 things, hanging paint and repeat business.
