bit of a mystery engine case - any thoughts?
 

this engine is in a '69 parts car I bought. engine is very clean an appears to be a fairly fresh rebuild, which is how it was represented to me. runs strong and not smokey.

the serial number indicated a fairly early '72 engine. type 911/57 ROW Zenith 2.4.

mystery #1 - oddly there's an 'A' and what looks like a '1' in front of the serial number. all digits are within the stars and don't look crowded so my thinking is it was stamped this way originally.

mystery #2 - the case is a mag 7R. which didn't come out until late '73. certainly not in early '72 as the serial number indicates.

any thoughts? thanks, Don.

Are you sure that is not an "AT"?

AT probably stands for "Austausch" which is German for "Replacement".

In other words, it is a replacement case with the "AT" and the original engine number. This makes sense based on what you have presented here.

thank-you Scott. I think you've nailed it. it does look like a 'T' but I wasn't thinking of that as a possibility. explains the later 7R case as well.

If you ever plan to sell the motor at some point, please let me know. I'm looking for a 911/57 for my '73 RoW restoration project, and don't see them too often in the US.

hi don, I think they're right, but I think the date would be closer to early 72 euro from my observations. 7r's didn't get into the us till mid 72 with the new 915 tranny. quite rare imho. cheers, geoff

that's kinda what I figured. the original engine would have been the 294th 911/57 engine built in '72. the case must have been replaced at least later in the '72 model year when 7R's were available.

yeah, the 911/57's don't seem too common in the US. funny, we see a few in Canada, but then we were 'ROW'. it's like the four speed 915's, which were the standard transmission, the five speed was optional. near every dealer in the US ordered five speeds. four speeds are rare in the US, more common in Canada.
