Early/Late Knee Pads and A/C Differences?
 

Ok. I was looking in the Pelican Parts catalog, and it seems that the knee pads from a 1974 are the identical part as a 1980 SC. This would seem to indicate that at least the bottom part of the dash is the same in both cars.

So...

Should I be able to fit the bottom A/C vents (that bolt to where the knee pads go) from a 1974 to the same location in my 1980 SC?


The reason I ask is I really need to add some more air movement in my car (tried all the bowtie mod's out there already) and I think that this is the only way I'm going to get satisfactory circulation. to Buy one of these new is 700$, and I see used setups on EBAY quite a bit for around 2-300$ but they're always out of earlier cars.

Any help or input?

If I remember correctly, there were several different versions of the under dash setup, depending on make. There were under dash version which mounted below the knee pads with small vents. Then another version was offered that replaced the knee pads with larger vents. You might try looking at Griffins website, I don't remember if that is where I saw the different models or if I have pictures in a book somewhere. Let me know if you need more detail.

Thanks for the reply. I better explain better what I'm trying to do. My car already has Factory A/C which functions. I want to run the Bowtie air flow though a bank of vents though an underdash unit. So, I just really need some kind of vent plennum that will mount up under the dash only. I will duct it up to my factory unit air from from the blowtie hole. this should give me full air flow accross the dash.

I checked out griffiths website, and talked to them. They want $700 for a new unit, which I can't really swing right now - nor do I particularly see the value.

So, I am looking for any underdash unit that will fit the bottom of my dash.

Chuck, I believe that the under dash units functioned the same way as the later units. By this I mean evaporator is still in the smugglers area between the wheels with the fan, etc... You might still look at the under dash units, check salvages, and just duct the cool air from your bow tie vent into the under dash vents. I think this would give you what you want. Or you could use the actual controls from the old under dash system with your existing system. Am I making any sense at all?

That is EXACTLY what I want to do! Just mount something under the dash, and use my existing system to blow air though it. Shouldn't any year's underdash vent fit from 1974 on in my 1980?

Hmm, don't know about any year fitting your 1980 SC. I say that because I don't know if Porsche changed the mounting points for the knee pads as the years went on. I would assume that they didn't, since things didn't change unless necessary, but I could be wrong. Like I said there were 2 versions that I've found/seen. One had smaller vents mounted below the knee pads, the other replaced the knee pads and had larger vents. Evidently each style was made by a different supplier for Porsche. Your best option in my opinion would be to contact salvage yards to see if they have a unit or look for it on this sites classifieds or ebay. I will drop a line to a local PCAer to see if he has any such item and will let you know. Good luck hunting.
OR I guess you could always try to fabricate your own.....if you are so inclined, but I would try to go the OE route first.

Ok to make it simple:

the attachment points for the kneepads hadn´t been changed from 68 to 85.

Now there are 3 base styles from pads.
68-73
74-77
78-85

They all bolt up but have a slight different design

The 74-77 kneepads have a little spoileredge or a chin with a edge that makes them special.

Factory AC kneepads had been always special. Porsche didn´t mount the vent unit to normal kneepads they made special ones the bolt the unit as high as possible.

You can bolt on the parts and open up the hole on the bulkhead and run a hose up into the vents.

Fit is perfect and just need to connect pipe and switch over the blower controls.
