Gas smell inside my 83 SC

Need some guidance. The inside passenger compartment of my 83 SC has a never ending gasoline smell. Smell is worse when the tank is full but never really goes away completely. Any ideas on the cause and fix?

Thanks,
Tim

Many threads on this. Off the top of my head, the most common suspects are: gas cap, gas sender seal, hoses or connections for the evaporative emissions inside the trunk, vapor hose or box behind the gauges, vapor/gas overflow hose or collection box behind the left headlight, fuel pump/hoses and connections. In short, check every hose, along its entire length, that you find connected to the tank and filler neck.

Give the above a close inspection as a start.

Without seeing it, I'd say it's the hoses from the evaporative emissions system. Replace them (I did) and the smell goes away. Just remember to disconnect the battery before you begin.

Check to see if your carbon filter canister hoses are detached or if it was removed. It is located under the passenger side rear wheel well closer to the door.

Hoses are available from Pelican, by the meter. You can look up the hoses in the PET and it will tell you their internal diameter, and length, in millimeters. This is worth getting right because you don't want a sloppy fitting hose. I'm replacing all my fuel and evap hoses and just got my first order from Pelican. The cloth covered hoses they sell are nice quality and as-original. Best regards, John in CT.

You can source them from our host. I used a local repair shop who carries this type material.

I'd also suggest a new gasket for the fuel sender. My '83 SC had similar issue and the new gasket solved the problem. To replace the hoses already mentioned is a good idea "while you're in there" as well.

I had this problem recently and it turned out to be the small piece of hose that goes from the tank to the pump. Maybe 4 inches of hose. Luckily I caught it before it gave out completely. The house had simply disintegrated to the point where it was leaking vapors and a bit of fluid as well. Its worth checking all rubber that is involved with the gas system.

Regards
Dave

Remember to disconnect the battery before you begin the repair process! Any spark you create could be "illuminating".

Checking it out myself this evening but I am new to getting hands on. This will be fun.
My car has a roll cage and Recaro seats, so that could be the culprit since there is no smell from the trunk or engine bay.

Weird, I filled mine up the other day and the stupid gas pump didn't shut of and overflowed...the over flow drain the body panel drained it all out. i looked n the trunk, interior etc to see if any overflowed an got on anything..how wants a fire...

No my gas gauge is at 1/2 (thought it was over filled!!) and I have a faint smell of gas in the cabin when it sits o/n
At this point I am assuming it is the residue in the overflow gutter and just waiting it out.

You can always pour some water in there to wash it out.

Anyone ever try one of these things. After about 3 hours in an enclosed garage, I get a gas smell, but have not been able to locate the source. Open up the garage door, air out the garage, close up, 3 or so hours later, smell is back.

I let my car sit for 48 hours and have a nice small puddle of fuel on the floor of my garage. Seems to be coming from the front right of the porsche. Still no free evening to start tearing things apart...
