Help with correct 901/01 input shaft seal part # or source?
 
Hello All,

I have the trans removed from my 1971 911 for the replacement of worn first gear synchro items. While it's out I noticed a bit of gear lube seepage at the input/main shaft seal and want to replace the input shaft seal.
I purchased seal 113-311-113-B/30 (noted to be correct for the 70-71 model year 911 trans) from our great host and the dimensions of this new seal match those stated in the parts catalog item description, so I was sent exactly what I ordered. I checked another vendors site and they list the same seal number and dimensions for my model and year.
My challenge is that the outside dimension of the new seal is 40mm, while the seal I want to replace measures about 44mm, the best measurement I can achieve with it in situ. I expect the old seal will be destroyed in the process of removal so I don't want to take it out until I have the new correct replacement seal in hand. I've attached two photos, one of my current (blue color) seal in place and another of the too small an outer diameter replacement seal shown in front of the existing seal.
My trans is stamped on the bottom flange with: 911/01 7114987 (I believe it to be original to my car, but no trans number is noted on my COA)
I would welcome any ideas on the part number and source for the correct seal I need. I was on track to join a club drive this coming weekend so I hope to resolve this quickly. Thanks in advance.

The old seal has an outer lip, the new one doesn't. Note the improved double lip design, something that's truly an "upgrade". Drive it carefully until it's flush with the case.

A huge Thank You for you! You are exactly right. Based on your advice I've moved forward with removing the seal and things are just as you described. FYI, my first post ever and I had the answer in minutes! I will make the club drive this weekend.

I'll post a couple of pics of the new and old seals side by side in case someone else has this question and searches the forum for help.
