Somewhere someone gave me a bit of sage advice.....

Kinda along the lines of.....

If the nut or bolt refuses to be loosened, try and tighten it a bit, just to get a bit more area of threads relieved. When you can feel the fastener give up, you have prevailed.

(ever take a bronze prop off a monel shaft while the boat is still in the water?)

Maybe a silly question. I know from my chemistry lessons (actually I am a chemist) that magnesium burns easily and very vigorously. What about heating a magnesium case with a torch. Looks pretty dangerous to me.
