I believe my problem with my car getting up to 250 degrees has somthing to do with my muffler, why you ask? Well the paint on the rear bumper panel is starting to bubble, I never had that problem before, nor did I have the heat problem. Is this possible?

Well if the engine is hotter, naturally the exhaust will be hotter. I doubt it is the muffler.

Can a very rich mixture cause a cat to run hot? Excess fuel getting burnt off?

Actually, I believe that a rich condition causes the exhaust to be cooler instead of hotter. I would suspect a clogged catalytic converter.

If unburned fuel is getting into the cat, it can get really hot. I had a Toyota pickup that I fouled the distributer cap (big puddle) while 4-wheeling in the middle of nowhere. It was running on 2 cylinders, and I had little choice but to limp it back to civilization that way. The cat got so hot it was glowing red, and it melted a plastic frisbie that was sitting on the floor pan behind the seat. The truck body was about 3" away from the cat, and still got hot enough to melt it.
Ruined the Cat, the material inside was cooked. I broke the pieces out, and ran with an empty shell for 6 years, with no problem passing smog. Tom ------------------ 82 911SC Coupe |
