Question about 1976 alternator install

1976 911S Targa. So we are on the way from Idaho to visit the wife's family in South Dakota and the Marchal 38 years young alternator bearing seized outside of Butte, Montana. First the voltage indicated a no charge condition and then, driving with battery power toward Butte, the bearing seized and alternator belt snapped. Waiting the hour or so for the tow truck to arrive, I called Pelican and ordered a replacement alternator, Valeo OEM 911-603-120-04-M262, to be delivered in one day. Then we were flatbedded into Butte where I could access the internet and I read that another part may be required for installation of this unit. Is this true, do I need another part? Or is it a simple alternator swap? Anyone know? Thanks.

76 alternator has remote voltage regulator
If the new alternator has a built in regulator then you need to alter your wiring. You do not need any additional parts either way. Caution, there are 2 sizes of alternators depth wise

Disclaimer: This is from memory, and may not be correct! IIRC, the extra part you need is the air guide part that bolts to the back of the alternator. I believe you can cut the old one to clear the internal regulator. As was mentioned earlier, you have to leave a wire off the back. Insulate it properly.

yup, leave the black wire with the push on connector off, unplug and remove the old regulator, cut a notch from the rear fiberglass cover to clear the internal regulator, generally placed at 6 o'clock.

I cannot get the key to go back onto the shaft to lock the fan to the alternator shaft. What happens if I leave it off? The engine will still cool because the fan is locked to the fan pulley. The alternator should still turn because the fan shaft is held by the nut, shims and pulley to the alternator shaft. There is a lot of friction holding the fan to the shaft. I think that will have to be enough unless there is some trick to getting the horrid little part to stop sliding sideways every time I try to put the fan on. I have no idea how I did it last time.

Gotta have it, IMO. Try deburring the lip of the slot in the shaft, and maybe just touching the edge of the center of the arc of the woodruff key until you can get it started. I squeeze it into place with channel lock pliers.

Success! The wife got it to go and after that it kept going back on as other mistakes were discovered. Now I can't get it to not go on straight. How weird is that?

I found out what the part is that I need that was not shipped. It is the retaining washer to hold the shims and compress the fan belt pulley. It has to fit the larger shaft and won't fit the new alternator. Curses! One of these replacement alternators should never be shipped without this part.

it is a 1mm difference in diameter on the updated cup washer. go buy a rat tail file and have at it. not elegent, but will get you down the road...

(agreed they should ship it with the alt. at least they come with the correct nut now...)

Fixed!!! Thanks to everyone for all their help. JW, we used the swiss army knife to cut the fiberglass to fit the profile of the voltage regulator. Deburred the key to get it to fit in the fan slot. Rat tail file, from Walmart, used to reshape the retaining cup for the shims. Each and every suggestion was used. I hope to return the favor in the future. Thanks Pelican buddies!! Amazingly, Pelican had the alternator on site the next morning. Great service!
