Any DIY 'Tips' on recovering door pockets? (1987)

I have a pair of new ABS door pockets on their way to me from these folks https://sites.google.com/site/911porschedoorpockets/home . I already have the Sliverknit/vinyl recovering kit from Bob at APPBIZ.

Now, all I have to do is put the two together and do it properly... looks as if it could be a bit tedious!

So, even as a newbie, I am amazed at the knowledge and experience here at Pelican and am hoping that someone has [successfully] done this little project and can offer suggestions... in as much detail as possible (!)

I am also interested in knowing just what adhesive would be best, and would provide long-term 'holding power.'

All the best,

Rob

I've had my ABS pockets for a couple of years and have yet to install them for that very reason....they sell you the pocket and the carpeting but in my case, gave me NO information of how to do it. I'm thinking that the whole works will have to go to an upholstery shop. I'll be curious to see what responses you may get. Cheers

I should've mentioned that my ABS pockets and carpeting was not from (at least directly from) the link that was in your post.

I think I am also going to buy these same pockets from 60sLincolns, but wondered if they were worth $300 when I can get new fiberglass ones for less than $200. Why did you ultimately choose ABS over FG?

I am planning on at least getting a quote from an upholstery shop before trying it myself.

Kerry...

I read all of the eBay feedback on the supplier of the ABS pockets; it was all positive. On the other hand, I noticed several posts on this Forum about the fiberglass pockets needing considerable "fitting" in order for them to work well. I'm really not interested in having to "rework" new stuff to make it fit my Porsche correctly!

Wow, Dri... I really admire your patience! When the pockets arrive, I'll be diving in right away. Absent any better advice, I'll start with the very top edges (where the vinyl folds over the tops of the pockets) and work from there. I am hoping to be able to glue a narrow band of the vinyl completely across the tops of the pockets first; then proceed to gluing/forming the carpet once that all-important top edge is securely in place.

I'm thinking I'll use contact cement for those first attachments to the pockets and then use spray adhesive (3M 74 Orange) to affix the carpet part. Wish me luck... of course, I'd rather have skill!

As you posted ... start at the top of the pocket where the vinyl starts so that you can hide it as much as possible. I clipped mine using alligator clips (paper supply type) to dry fit. When I was certain the dry fit lined up correctly, I started the trimming and glue. Worked great! The alligator clips are also good for holding the lower edge while the glue drys. Post pics

take a look at this video on a carpet install. It covers the entire car and is in three parts. I believe the door pockets are in part 3. I'm currently doing mine but have not started the pockets yet. Hope this helps. Installation instructions interior carpet set Porsche 911 '74-'89 (part 1 of 3) - YouTube

I think the product I used was 3M Foam Fast. I'll check tomorrow and see if I can post a pic of the can.

Check out GeorgeK's cab thread:

Pretty sure I recall him doing them.

Spray adhesive

Here's what I used. I did use staples on the inside of the pocket for the vinyl. My pockets had staples so I assumed that was factory and put staples back on the inside of the pockets. You want the adhesive to tack and then apply the fabric. I didn't apply to the entire piece but rather lifted the fabric and sprayed the adhesive on then checked fit and worked my way down to the bottom of the pocket. I didn't do a great job on the vinyl but it turned out better than what I had before. Just be patient and take your time. Have either a good sharp pair of scissors or an exacto knife because you'll have to do some cutting at the bottom of the pocket if I recall correctly.
BTW, I bought my spray adhesive on Ebay for considerably less than anyone else was offering it for. I bought 6 cans for my complete interior job.
