Man am I on a RUSH!!!
Some of you will know that I did my valve adjustment this weekend, after the initial setback I set to work. 16 of the 22 studs turned out grrrrrr. Anyway, I started the adjustment process and for the first 20 minutes could not get the feeler gauge to go in. The air was turning blue. I then figured out the blade should sit about 4mm below where I was trying to insert it. Try to adjust the first valve and I break the blade. DOH. My daughter comes outside with football and wants to play so I can the adjustmens for a while and kick the ball around and cool off a bit. Decide to take it easy and slowly. Well it just got better from there onwards. I used the next blade for the complete adjustment and the THREE times I checked it afterwards and it is still fine. It's all about making sure you get the tool at the correct angle, take it slow and dont force anything. All in all 10 hours, but thats with taking my time and having to clean up all the valve cover stud holes to replace the studs etc. Well I started her and my jaw dropped to the floor. All the clackety clack, tap, tap, tap, has gone. Its like a different car. Thanks to Superman, JDub, ChrisBennet, Zeke, Tim and Wayne's 101 Projects book for advice and keeping me smiling through this adjustment. If you want to do something that is a real confidence builder, adjust your valves. You will get sore muscles where you didn't know you had muscles, esp neck, but the rewards are great. I think I'll just go and start her up:-) Cheers Jakes ps Tim, anytime you want to adjust your valves, I'll see if I can come round to help you. Might be difficult as were expecting another anytime now, which is why I'm getting all these tasks out the way that I have been putting off.

Nice one Jakes!
Are you saying that ALL the clackety, tap, tap noises have gone? I thought it was normal to hear some light tapping, hope you haven't done em too tight!! ![]() I wish I was brave enough to do mine but I'm petrified of f***ing something up and screwing my engine!! Sounds like you're going to have your hands full soon (congrats!) so I won't ask you to come and help, thanks for the offer though. I know a guy who works for a Porsche dealership who does work 'on the side' so I'll probably let him do it. Cheers, Tim. ____________ 1983 SC Targa |

Tim,
Nope the gaps are right. The feeler gauge slips in nice, smooth and easy. I suppose I would call it a faint ticking sound, but it is loads better than it was before. I kind of wish I had made a wav recording of the motor before and after.... Cheers Jakes

A Porsche motor with good valve guides and properly adjusted valves....makes no valve noise.
