Early Red Leather Interior
I've made some progress this weekend on the conversion of my black vinyl interior to red leather. The RS door panels are complete and I got the lower dash trim in today. The dash trim looked like it was going to be a bear, but it wasn't too bad at all. In fact, the 31 year old adhesive was still sticky enough that I didn't even have to apply any new adhesive!! The red leather rear jump seats are in (no photos yet) and the new factory sport seats (red with houndstooth inserts) are going back in tonight. I ran into a bit of a snafu with the rear side panels and the rear deck so those are are their way back to California.

Can't wait to see pics of the sportseats with the same treatment. Keep them coming! GeorgeK |

Looks great! I'm with George - hurry up on the seats too.
Which wheel is that? Is it a Prototipo - 'cause I have one like that which I was going to carefully mask and spray the unpainted ally to black (I will lose the prototipo screen printing though).

By the way, I know where the silver spoked Prototipos can be had for cheap. They are factory seconds (minor stuff), and less than US$150 (but are in New Zealand).

Thanks for the comments guys. I got a tremendous amount of help from this board in putting this project together. Sometimes those little questions that are answered here can save hours of head-scratching when taking things apart!
The wheel is a Prototipo and I paid ALOT more than US$150 (but it was in the US!). For my car, with the silver Targa bar and silver paint, I think the silver-spoke wheel looks better than black. More photos soon! -- Curt |

Wow Curt, that looks great!
I've always loved the red interior in an early car. Red sport seats will provide added drool factor to an already stunning interior. Boy, I am jealous now. ![]() Regards, Kurt |

Awesome
Nice work. I was just telling Curtisaa a couple of hours ago how much I like red interiors. I saw a '73 "E" targa in Silver/Red at Cambria, it was in "used" condition but made my heart pound.

Yeah, those were Eric's seats and door panels. It really does look good with the silver and completely changes the character of the car. I think black is the only other exterior color in which you could pull this off!! -- Curt

Awesome Curt!
I think the colored leather interiors was one of the trademarks of Porsche on the early cars (356, 912 and early 911). Performance, quality and class.

Thanks Denis & Fritz. I've always loved the classic silver/red combo on Porsches and now I've finally got one. Apparently, Porsche thinks so too - their new Targa diecast model set is in silver/red!

what color red is this. I am planning to do a red leather conversion but am trying to find a muted red...not can can or lobster....and not burgundy. They are al wonderful colors, but I am looking for the red that is in the singer 911. Seems similar to what you have here, but pictures are so hard to tell by.

Here is mine I'm almost finished with. It's not loud. Not lobster or cancan. It's not Porsche color I don't think, I choose it all myself. It's kind of a muted cherry. A wine color maybe.

I got one hide from eBay but needed another. I couldn't get more from there so I searched around.
I fount this Wholesale Leather Hides | Leather for Upholstery | Leather Hide Store and the sales person matched some swatches (5) and sent the samples to me to choose. I chose what she called red 51 I think and I bought the last hide she had at that time. It was on clearance luckily. So it takes lots of leather I found out. I used up two whole hides and my interior isn't all leather as you can see. Call or email them and they'll send samples to look at. It's kind of fun. As long as you have a good interior guy at least. Good luck.

I'm sorry but I'm rather proud of how this turned out. Car is not done but interior is 90% done. Still have the rear seats to install but don't have the correct bolts yet. Car is dirty and rough but the interior males me smile.
