Question about carbs and tach... '87 Carrera
Good day!
There is so much I don't know... but I'll start with this: My car is an '87 with the original engine converted to 3.4 (by Bill Brewster). If I convert this engine to PMOs, will the tach still work, or will more 'stuff' be needed to make it work. Sooner or later, I'd like to finish the installation of twin plugs (the heads and covers have already been modified, there are just "dummy" plugs in the plus holes right now). Now that I think about it, I should probably do the 'twin plugs' first... it's a quicker - and less expensive - 'project.' As always, thanks! Rob

I'm guessing you could keep the original DME around, provide it with power/ground and speed/reference sensors, and it 'might' work fine with nothing else connected. Take a flywheel and mount it on a lathe with the sensors rigged up to give it a test!
As an alternative, convert your DME software to use a MAP sensor and just use it to drive the ignition timing. Warning: not sure that MAP sensors work so well with individual PMO's... BTW, does anybody still make or sell the Andial splitters for twin plugging? Sounds like a project, but if you have the time, could be a fun one. Chuck.H '89 TurboLookTarga, 384k miles |
