Last night after a particularly busy day at work, I was in a foul mood and a few minutes late picking my wife up at the curb in front of baggage claim at Seattle Tacoma International Airport. Traffic was a zoo, with cars at every angle imaginable entering and pulling out of spaces. I thought I spotted my wife but the only open hole was about fifty yards short of her position. No problems, I’ll pull in, give her a ring on her cell, and have her walk to me. Well I called and for what ever reason, she didn’t pick up. As I got out of the car to wave her over, I saw one of those self important looking cops with his hard ass face on, making his way post haste right to me. I’m thinking, “Keep your pants on officer, I’ve been here less than five minutes,” and was taking a breath to say just that when he says, “I’m sorry sir, for safety reasons, I’m going to have to confiscate that car… for as long as it takes me to do a few laps around the airport

It's always nice to hear someone admire your car that way. On Sunday, a bunch of local PCAers displayed their 911s at the Octoberfest on the base at Fort Belvoir in northern Virginia. The young MP who waved me onto the base, with a pistol on his hip, put his hand on the door, looked over the car and said, "Now you'll be returning my car after the event, right?" I laughed and told him we could talk about it.
By the way, there were some nice cars there, including a newly acquired 72 911T with an RS suspension. Bill '88 Carrera Coupe |

I had something similar happen the day I bought my 911. I had just come back from the DMV with a co-worker in the car. I was a couple cars back in line at a stop light. The light turned green, I wove my way through traffic, hit 70 (in a 45) and saw rollers behind me. I promptly pulled over, shut off the car and waited for the ticket. The cop walked up, leaned over, and said "Now why'd you do that?" I began apologizing and he asked for my license. When I offered the registration, he said "Nah, I just need your license to make it look official. What year is this, she's in great shape." I was shocked. I guess I made up for that getting popped doing 70 in a 35 last month.

While flying at 110 mph plus in squadron strength, thru traffic, up Pacific Coast Highway one night, we noticed a car overtaking us from behind. So we cooled it and yep, California's finest pulled the whole group over. All tensed up at , what was going to be a whopper of a ticket-if not jail, I looked over the officer as he was perusing each car. He comes up to our car, shining his flashlite on the clean lines on the front of the RSR look. He motions us to roll down the window and with a grin... " I suppose you were all haulin' ass to get off the freeway so you could turn around to go get that front license plate that must have fallin off back there?"
The guy was really cool and we gladly accepted the 75 mph penalty instead of the heavy duty tickets we so richly deserved. A lot of these guys are car people too and if you're not an a-hole about it, a certain amount of leniency comes your way. |

I have to admit that, at least with me some of it is age at 32 I'm not a punk kid in a hot rod anymore but, I have had very pleasurable experiences with the local police since getting my car almost 2 years ago. I can't remember how many times I've let of the throttle as I see a cruiser roll by and they don't turn around. I've only been pulled over a few times as well and usually it's by and enthusiast cop who wants to know more about the car or a non-enthusiast who lets me go figuring I'm a mostly responsible adult just having a little fun. The cops in my neighborhood are another story all together, they love my car especially when I told them how little they go for, in fact one of them is seriously looking for an SC or older car as a weekend toy to bad he wants a coupe or I'd send him bell's way.
