Help with odometer

I removed my speedometer to have the odometer repaired by Dicks Speedo here in Phoenix. When I took it in I was told that the cost would be between $185 and $ 200. I was set back and was surely expecting to pay $ 150 for the replacement of the stripped plastic gear. That is almost sky high. I asked the technican at Dicks Speedo why so costly? He went on to tell me that the chip had to be replaced and that alone was $100.00. I am I missing something. The speedometer works and the odometer is not working and the 911 is famous for the gears being stripped out for the odometer and this guy wants to charge me up to $200 for a chip?? and oh don't forget the 50cent plastic gear. Please can someone help me understand the logic??

Contact North Hollywood Speedometer for a frame of reference. www.nhspeedometer.com.

They do a lot of advertising in Porsche publications, and I'm sure they'll be able to give you a quote over the phone.

I took out my speedometer this morning fully expecting to start chasing those elusive plastic gears.
I opened it up, it didn't look too bad, spun the drive, it worked!
put it back in the car. Whoopi. Seems to have cured itself.

Maybe you should open yours up for peek inside, I know it's not so simple as an old one but you could be lucky.

Dang, there must be something going around with odometers!

I posted a thread about my problem the other day and decided to go ahead and take mine apart to see what the problem was (check my post for some helpful hints).

At first it was obvious the gears weren't engaged but much to my amazement once I spun it by hand it started to work. I spun about 1 mile just to make sure all teeth were engaging and while 1 tooth was a little worn I am going to put her back together and reinstall and hopefully the problem will be solved.

If not, I'll keep searching for replacement gears or maybe I'll get lucky at the upcoming swap meet and find an old one I can take apart.

Good luck!
