Going to Germany, what to look for?

As luck would have it, I'm going to be in Germany next month for work. A couple questions as it's my first time there. I'm interested in early Porsche stuff, memorabilia, parts, etc. Is there anything in particular that I need to make a point of seeing or visiting? I'll be in the Baesweiler, Dusseldorf area. I don't think I'll get enough free time to make it to Stuttgart. Hoping to find some small things for my 72 targa... while there. Is it worthwhile trying to bring some bits back?

Thanks for any info!

Rick

I hate to tell you this, but there have been 40 + years of "pickers" before you. I've been selling at Porsche swap meets here on the West Coast since 1968, and have made numerous friends from Europe who come here once or twice a year to look for exactly what you're looking for over there. There are a couple of guys that hit every shop they can find up and down the coast a couple of times a year, as well, filling containers for shipment to Europe. I wish you good luck!

I would visit Mittelmotor in Bochum if you have time. Nice people with good technical English spoken by lots of the staff and a great parts catalogue. I used them a lot when I lived in Germany. Mittelmotor Fahrzeug- und Teile Handelsgesellschaft mbH

Thanks for the replies! I appreciate it. With the euro/dollar rate and getting stuff home, I'm sure things are actually cheaper here... I found a few vintage automotive themed flea markets and auto shows but not sure I can make the dates...

sorry...

I hate to say it, but you will probably find more Porsche stuff in the US than here in Germany.

I am in Germany at least twice a year (I fly over again next week for 10 days) and have not seen much in the area you are traveling. I always go to Dortmund in the "Ruhrgebiet" area close were you will be. The big Porsche meeting is always the beginning of May.

I just returned from a trip to Belgium and Germany but was more south in Koblenz and the Rhine area. I did hit the Nurburgring and there was an undoor "swap meet" at the track but most of the stuff was uninteresting, including a lot of Porsche stuff, and not worth carrying home. Lots of owners manuals, stickers, signs etc.

I did do a lap at the Nordschelife and hit the the indoor karts if that is too far for you there's always Michael Schmacher's Kart track near Cologne:

I agree, as the Germans are beating the bushes here in the U.S.
for P-cars and parts.

And, are spending big bucks, or should I say big Euros restoring U.S. finds
in the Porsche restoration shop.

I was all excited when I went to Germany in '92 - even went to Stuttgart. Only P-car I saw on the road was a 944 - seriously. Not even the shops had any books. Saw 964s on the conveyor line between the pink buildings - that's about it. That's the only time I saw 911s in whole month I was there - even saw a Ferrari Testarossa being driven on the snow-lined streets of Frankfurt in December, no 911s though.

I ended up with some free time in Dusseldorf and went to the Classic Remise Auto Museum. It was great! Not a ton of early year 911s but a bunch of mid years, lots of 356, and a host of other great classics. A great way to kill a few hours. Highly recommend going there if you get a chance. The architecture alone is worth the time, it's an old train station.

I totally agree with Steenkamp, I am in BRD several times a year & P-car stuff is 1) hard to come by 2) more expensive than Stateside.
Your better off hitting the car museums & bars. The Green Hell will be closed by then so wont be much to see there.

You're only about 3 hours from Stuttgart, just visited Munich for work and made the trek. A truly amazing museum. In the US we see some amazing cars, over there you see the actual car form the books and the races. Remarkable.

Watch tv after 9pm and have a laugh at the dildo and vibrator ads.

Very uncomfortable when sitting with your wife and parents in law...

One of my favorites from the Remise Classics. Lots of pristine cars there but loved the character and story on this one.

Stolen in Italy... Found and recovered several years later in Belgium.
