Brad Penn in an older car

I was hoping not to start another lengthy oil thread, so I read several pages in the hundred page long thread about oil and concluded that Brad Penn 20w50 is the go-to juice, but I also read accounts where synthetics cause leaks. Is this also true of Semi-Synthetics like the Brad Penn 20W50?

In other words, what to use in my '73T? No racing, no track, but also no interest in a re-build anytime soon Just looking for the best protection.

Hi quickstep I also have a 73t and last summer I used brad penn semi synthetic and found it leaked oil more than ever so this summer I'm going to try Valvoline vr1 racing oil non synthetic and see how that works out

brad penn or mobil 1 15-50 will work great in an air-cooled.

Geez, can't believe I am wading in here. THIS is the only non-semisynthetic 20w/50 Brad Penn I can find. It is listed as a v-twin bike oil. I am too chicken to try it even though I can get it for cost from the local rep. Anyone want take the plunge and give us the report?

Brad Penn 20W-50 is what I use in my 1973. No leak issues. It is not a true synthetic oil (i.e. Group IV or V). It is a Group III which is highly refined petroleum. I never has a significant leak issue with the oil. In the US this can be marketed as synthetic oil but it is totally different than the true synthetic oils which are made via fancy chemistry.

Harry D if it is not a true synthetic oil it might be good for some older tight engines. I just won't put synthetic in a old motor. I have see it come back out on my older VW Bus motors and I end up having to put in heavy strait 50 wt motor oil to slow the leaks down. . Now if you have a new rebuilt motor go synthetic. My 82 911 I already have a tiny drip and there is no way I would ever put synthetic in it. I can't afford a rebuild at this moment so dino oil 20/50 is what i do and what's been in it so far in its life. Just change regularly.

If you have leaks already, do not use it.

Went to the link and read the description. Says its blended with synth just like the one made for cars. I'm really confused now.

All of my motors that are non-leakers get Joe Gibbs DT50 these days. Full synth, lots of ZDDP and specially formulated for VW/Porsche air-cooled engines. I use it in my SC, 930 and will use it in my '69S when it is done. My' 65 is a leaker so go back and forth between Penn and Porsche.

I was in a bind last year and needed a couple quarts of the Brad Penn 20/50. The local small custom bike shop is listed as a distributor on the Penn website so I called and went to see them. They had the motorcycle oil. I asked the shop owner what was different from the motorcycle oil and the automobile oil and his words: "The label. The bike guys won't buy it if it doesn't have a motorcycle on the label". I then asked him if it didn't have stuff in it for the clutches or the sorts and was met with a resounding "nope". It looked the same, it poured the same, and my 911 didn't blow up.
