993 fan bearing removal

I am about to powdercoat my 993 fan and need to remove the alternator fan bearing. Has anyone done this without destroying the bearing?

Thanks

beamonk. You'll have to rig up a puller.I used a(3) fingered puller and (3) 6mm x 100 mm bolts or so,plus a stack of washers. This worked for me. Dan

A regular two-jaw puller worked fine for my 964 (I think the fan/bearing is the same for a 993). I pulled the bearing because it was making noise; you might consider replacing your bearing as a preventative measure; about $75 or so as I recall. Made a *big* difference in the sound for me.

Does it pull out from the front? It seems there may be some way to get it out from the rear if you can get the clip off.

beamonk, I honestly don't remember. It was over a year ago that I pulled mine.I went to a single pulley, RSR setup. Keep in mind, that the bearing is interference fit onto the alternator shaft.Dan

I hoped to remove just the bearing too, but soon realized two things:

(1) The clip holding it in is next to impossible to remove.
(2) Porsche does not sell the bearing alone; you get the flanged carrier/holder with it, a.k.a., "wheel hub." Here's a photo of my old one (ignore the yellow and blue lines):

hmmm, I can get the bearing, but it still doesn't look fun to get it out.

Just buy the "wheel hub" (which includes the bearing) from Porsche and be done with it. Save the trouble of having to find an aftermarket bearing to match, install, etc. That clip that holds the bearing in the wheel hub looks like an absolute b*tch to remove anyway.

I pressed the hub out, then we got a dental drill and modified the clip, had the whole shebang out in five minutes. My friend who is in the bearing business is going to find the bearing for me. The old one is fine, but I might as well replace it while I am in there. If anyone wants the aftermarket bearing number, let me know and I will get it for you. Thanks for the help.

I screwed up my bearing when I was attempting to remove my fan from the alternator shaft. I was able to get just the bearing out and found that its 32 mm OD x 14 mm wide by x 17 mm bore (shaft). Can you let me know where you got the bearing - I searched the internet and cant find it anywhere....

By the way, the retaining clip was not bad to get out. Use a small flathead screwdriver and puic tool to prevent the clip from droping back into its groove.

Well, I lied. My friend in the bearing business couldn't find it. Porsche only part.

Can we revive this? My alt. is in the shop for a rebuild and the boss is saying he can't source a bearing for this. He said he repacked the current one, the plastic race is not damaged and it should be fine to reuse. But I'd like to do this all correctly the first time. Is it possible to source just the bearing and, if so, is it easy to remove the old one and install the new one?
