Parking brake light always on

My parking brake light was on continuously since I brought it back to running condition after an 18 year rest in my garage. I pulled the front seats out disassembled the hand brake to adjust the contact and ground; cleaned the brake light connections and bulb contacts; disconnected the master brake cylinder; did the turn on ignition then disconnect the battery, turn off ignition reconnect the battery and turn on ignition and still the parking light on the dash stayed on. Asked around for additional input and was told to unplug it and forget it as most people do because it is such a pain to fix.

I also pulled the trunk apart to get at the back of the dash light and wires, found nothing remarkable. I disassembled the two pieces of the parking brake light housing and attempted to figure it out using my multi-meter. Upon inspection I noticed a very faint mark where the two pieces rest on each other. This mark

started at the end of a line of solder and went to one of the copper blades. This made me wonder if the two piece of plastic could have warn away the solder. I checked the theory with my multi meter and it looked like it could fix the problem. broke out my soldering iron and carefully added some solder to re-connect the blade. I re-installed the light in the dash and put the rest of the car back together, got in started the car and released the parking brake and light was still on. As I was not about to give up now I did the, ignition on disconnect the battery, ignition off re-connect the battery and then start car. I got released the hand brake and the light went out!

Parking Brake circuit board as originally removed from dash.

The camera flash really makes the bare spot on the circuit board stand out. It was no way this obvious under normal lighting, just a faint shadow.

Circuit board repaired.

Circuit board repaired, re-assembled and ready to back into dash.

Hope this helps someone else with a parking brake light that just will not go out.

Best of luck,

Rahl

I disconnected mine years ago. May have to take a look at the circuit board now. Where exactly is this board?

Circuit Board location

Hi rs6er,

The circuit board is part of the light "socket" in the dash. If you look closely at the photos you can see the two light bulbs in the "as pulled from dash" photo 1. The assembly is two pieces of plastic; the circuit board and the light "socket". The two pieces just slide apart easily. Instead of tearing apart the trunk I think you can just remove the light by prying it out of the dash. You have to be careful not to make indentations in the soft dash, maybe someone that has done this can comment.

This is a 1976 Porsche, I do not know which models or how long Porsche used the same type of in-dash parking light.

Best of luck,

Rahl
