Question oil overfill

Newbie to this board.

Please forgive me if this question has been answered. I searched through a hundred posts but did not find any that stated what damage to the engine could result by overfilling the oil tank.

I went and purchased a 72 911T with a (stock?) 2.4L. I looked it over real good and drove it around and checked for smoke before buying it. no smoke. I drove it home about 85 miles still no smoke. I had no manual so I checked the oil with the engine off. Added about 3 qts of oil and wondered how did I make it home. Needless to say when I took the car around the block it started smoking like crazy. Oil all over the engine, in the air box, on the ground, etc. I cleaned it up by wiping out the air box and washing down the engine real good. Then I got a hold of a manual and discovered what I'd done. I removed the excess oil by using a syphon pump.

for over a year now I just let the car sit. Once a month or so I start it up and drive it around a few minutes. It runs fine and doesn't smoke at first. After driving it a few minutes it begins to smoke, especially when I punch it.

If I damaged something from overfilling the oil tank what do you think was damaged? Valve seals? Rings?

Oh NO! You let it sit for over a year? Your car is smoking because its lonely!!!!!!!

You did no harm with the overfilling, just caused a smokey mess. It can be easily cured.

Do a search of this board and you will find remedies to get it all shipshape. The best cure is to clean up the airbox and then drive that baby until the oil is purged from where it ain't supposed to be.

Just so you know you are not alone, here is one sample of the problem:

Too Much oil

Prials is giving you good info. The oil is probably in the muffler and doesn't smoke until you get it good and hot. Go out and drive the damn car! The smoke will go away after 20-30 miles.
