Removing Blaupunkt Stuttgart from 964 C4

Can anyone give me some guidance on removing the original radio that came with my 1992 C4?

One guy at a car audio store said I need to drop the dash, but that seems pretty extreme, and he was probably 5 years old when the car came out. However, I also do not see the 4 holes I am supposed to see for a DIN radio removal tool.

Any help would be appreciated!

i believe the blau stuttgart is a shaft style radio, if it is you need to pop off the knobs then remove the shaft nuts that affix the radio to the dash plate.
do you have a pic of the radio?

Wow---thanks for the quick reply! I only see one knob, and it doesn't respond to a bit of moderate pulling (I am hesitant to really yank on it until I know I should).

I did not think I could find a picture quickly, but I just did. It is attached. No holes . . . although the climate control block has four holes right next to it. Maybe I'm supposed to pull that out and get at the radio somehow?

ok....do not pull the knob!!!
on either side of the radio there will be the 4 holes, but you need to remove the "caps".
i photoshopped where they are in red, use a small pick on the edge and the should come right off revealing the holes.

You are exactly right---I used a tiny flat head screwdriver and they easily popped off to reveal the four holes. Thanks!

I don't have the right DIN tool, though, it appears. Knowing there was only a small chance it'd work, I bought a tool that looked about right but was marked for Ford vehicles. It fits in, but doesn't engage sufficiently. What spec tool am I looking for? Any ideas where to get it (online or otherwise)?

the ford tool is identicle, it will work fine. you want to push it in until you feel it "click" the apply slight pressure sideways (left to the left/right to the right) to unclip the clips in the radio, this will unlock the radio from the cage.
if there is a backstrap behind the radio it will not come out, you may need to go under the dash and see if it's secured with a strap off of the back of the radio, undo the strap then pull out the radio.

edit...........after thinking about it, your c4 has a closed off under dash (i think), there probably won't be a backstrap, after getting the tools inserted use your finger in the cassette slot to VERY CAREFULLY pull outward, but be very carefull, i've seen people rip the faces off of radios this way.

Hmmm. I shoved the tools in even further into the slots this time and even when pulling slightly outward (as the instructions direct) I end up just pulling out the tools, not the radio.

If I do a contortionist move and look up from the passenger side front footwell I can see part of the back of the radio, but nothing stands out as a strap or retainer. Should I removed something to get a better view?

I can't get a good grip on the radio from the cassette slot, either, by the way.

Yeah, you should be able to get behind there reasonably OK, as long as you're a midget, a contortionist, or very determined. A head torch comes in very handy here (boy, I'm glad I gave my Dad one for Christmas last year ). I don't believe that removing the climate control will help, but what you could do, if you can get an assistant, is get someone to operate the DIN tool while you help from behind, you should be able to get your hand in there.

edit: just thought I'd add that my radio has no backstrap, but it's an aftermarket install, so your mileage may vary.

the tools may not be catching the clips properly, they should only have to go in about 1" to catch the clips, if they're going in too far you may not be getting the leverage needed to unclip it.
if you can get a hand behind the radio you can try pushing from the rear while unclipping one side at a time.
try to get a good look behind the radio though to ensure there is no backstrap.

just to make sure you're doing it right.......
the red lines are the tools, the blue arrows indicat the dirrection each tool needs pressure to unclip.
you could also try a flat screwdriver at the edge of the radio/dash to get better leverage while having pressure on the tools.

Yep. You are right once again---I had over-inserted the tools. The radio came out and I replaced the 5A fuse and it works again (I am still going to replace the radio, seeing as I already have purchased a better one, etc., but now I can relax the pace).

Can't believe those rip-off artists told me the whole dash needed to be dropped to check and see if the fuse had blown. The process would take me 3-4 minutes next time around and I don't know what I am doing, so either they were ignorant or wanted to charge me some labor and then would inform me the fuse was fine (so the radio needed to go).

I have one in very very good condition. I dont want to use the word perfect because Im not sure that every feature works as I haven't used it in 12 years. Appearance wise the radio is A+ maybe even concourse condition. That said I'm not giving it away lol

Make the 'special' tool out of a coat hanger- Cut two pieces- maybe six inches long each and then bend them into a 'U' so they line up with the holes on the front sides of the radio and Bob's Your Uncle'- Even a slim knife will do the job. Just slide them in the side to release the tabs.
