Unhappy Setting G50 shifter linkage

Well well my lond awaited and anticipated Haynes manual arrived and guess what - no information at all on the G50 gearbox. Why the hell doe they say all models up to '89 on the cover! Anybody know of an '88 or '89 Porsche with a 915 or 901 box?

So now I need some help - can anyone tell me how to adjust my transmission shifter linkage.

There's really not much to adjust. Everything aft of the shifter is fixed. When you R&R the shift assembly, conventional wisdom is to mark the position of the three bolts that fasten the shifter cage to the tunnel. In theory you need to move the entire assy forward enough so you can push the shift lever into 1st, 3rd and 5th, but back enough so you can just as easily reach 2nd and 4th.

There is a great article in the April 2002 Excellence on overhauling the G50 shifter. This is a quote from the article:

Then we checked and adjusted the the shifter base so the distance between the face of the new bushing and the shift lever (the piece the shifter's shaft bolt goes through) measured 5 mm when the shifter was in fourth gear.
The Bentley Manual also covers it (but not the tranny overhaul). The Haynes manual is better than nothing, but not much. I have Wayne's 101 book and the Bentley manual on my shelf (okay, I have the Haynes too, but it came with the car and).

I just R&R'd my shifter - let me know if you have any specific questions and I'll do my best to answer.

Thanks Don

I have just bought all the goodies so I will be starting work this week - My first engine drop as well but I will put the new rod bushing in tonight and see what improvement in the first to second gear shift. I wasn't able to track the rod seal where it goes into the gearbox - you wouldn't have a part number by any chance?

I'll let you know how it all goes

Hi David,

Given the difficulty I had driving the selector shaft seal in, if you are dropping the engine I'd strongly consider waiting until it is out.

Don et al

Just fitted the new rod bushing and there is a small improvement but still far away from where I want to be with the 1-2 shift. I set the housing quite far back with about 5mm clearance between the rod end and the side of the housing - I figured that this would give the most support to the shifter rod as I shift inot 2nd. No effing way!

I'm going to try moving the housing forward in small increments and see if that makes any difference and then fit the new seal as Don suggested. Aside from the constant niggle whenever I try to shift, trying to solve the problem has really bitten me - I WILL get this sorted!
