Diagnostic tool for 964

Hi all,

Just bought a 1992 911 C2 and want to keep up on any service issues. Looking at the PDT999 for $375 for code reading but then ran across the refurbished Bosch (hammer) for $1200. What is the difference?

One is a NLA Bosch piece and the other is made by some guy in the Netherlands. Might be great, might not - I can't say either way. This is another option.

the PDT999 is good. But for a lot less money, just get the tool sold by Tore at Bergvill F/X and use it in conjunction with the free scantool software developed by Ricardo over on Rennlist.
T-OBD - Diagnostics For Porsche 968, 964 and 993 - OBD Diagnostics - Products

In addition the 19 pin connector Tore sells is $8.31 on newegg.com You will need this for a 964.
19 Pin OBD OBD2 968 993 944 964 Adapter Lead Cable Diagnostic Tool For Porsche - Newegg.com

And the scantool link:

You will need a laptop or a windows pc with a long USB cable.

Durmetric is great, but also pricey, and as of version 6 STILL! does not offer an idle adaptation feature.

Apologize if I sound really stupid here, do I literally just plug this into my car and hook up to a laptop to view the findings? I'm used to old muscle cars, this is my first (semi) modern car.

I ask because some folks want $1500+ for a diagnostic tool, so this seems like a bargin.

For the most part yes! Although, some people experience problems getting their car to communicate with their computer. However Tore does a wonderful job including troubleshooting and install instructions for use with the scantool software. My advice to you is just go to the site link above and download the software. Although you will not be able to use it, you can at least see some of its features and thumb through the install/communication procedures.

It will allow you do do a number of things, and check the status of various components to see if they are functioning properly. In addition, you can read and clear codes--which is most likely the first thing you would use it for.

PS. You should update your location in your profile and upload some pictures of the car!
