Smog Pump Removal - Next Steps

Well, I started the smog pump removal on my '78 last night. Does the part below the pump get pulled as well? What needs to get plugged and what's the best way?

I'll pull the bracket out too. Does anyone know off the top of their head what bolts are needed once the bracket is removed?

Thank you!

The part you circled includes a check valve that prevents exhaust gas from being pumped back into the engine compartment. It is connected to a "spider" of tubes that tap into the exhaust head. You can leave it alone because the check valve effectively seals the tubes, you can also plug the end of the valve for peace-of-mind, or you can remove the valve and connected tubes to the exhaust head and plug the holes for a permanent fix--plugs are available through this site. BTW, the last option involves removing the heat exchangers so be prepared...

Once you remove the bracket, you will need at least one new shorter stud to torque down the cover plate (this is from memory so someone else may correct on this) as there was a longer one installed to accommodate the the bracket.

Before you go buying new bolts, first see if you can get the old ones out!

I've been right where you are now... I can loosen the bolts, but did not have enough clearance to entirely remove one of them. so the bracket is still in there.

I know, I know,,, points off for leaving the bracket.

One day, when the engine comes out, I'll be able to remove that bracket and the metal air lines, too.

Interesting. Let me see if I have this right. I can remove the circled part and use the plugs to plug the holes? How many plugs?

One other thing, where do you get the clamp w/flanges that hold the duct above the bracket in place?

6 plugs, one at each cylinder. They are fairly small.

You have to remove stuff to do it.

Please don't dumpster your pump and stuff. There are many state that require that you keep the pumps after 1974 models (like Denver/CO and vicinity), and there may be more in the future.

Is that the heater hose above the pump? Big hose clamp?

78-targa,

Look underneath the motor and you'll see the spider plumbing for the air injector. This can be removed from the 6 air-injectors. Then remove the 6 air injectors and plug the holes. The plug size is the same size as the thread of the air injectors. I bought these plugs from our host.

For the meantime after removing the smog pump, and the remaining contraption shown in the picture, plug the big fitting until you are ready to remove the rest of the plumbing. HTH.

Tony

ossi - is there a clearance issue that necessitates pulling the heat exchangers? This is on my project list (just ordered the plugs from PP earlier this week) and looking at other posts and under my car, it looks like you can get to them fairly easily.

Just be prepared to remove the exchangers. Although there appears to be clearance, heat and corrosion often make it necessary to attack with more room and different tools. If you can remove them with the exchangers in place, that is a definite benefit. BTW, it's been a while since I did this and I just remember the need to remove the exchangers. I do not have a clear image of the clearances.

If the air tubes on a 78 are anything like they were on my 75 be prepared to break them, I only got 3 of 6 out of the head clean, the rest snapped off with very little effort. One came out with a easy out after that, 2 I had to dremel and pick out bit by bit, it was not fun

The plugs on the heads need to be 10mm fine thread. I remove the studs and install 45 or 50mm capnuts, there is only 2 that are 8mm

Thanks for all the help! I picked up 6 plugs from our host. Any ideas for plugging the hole in the bottom of the engine compartment?

Measure the hole, hop into the car and drive to Lowe's/Menard's/Home Depot. Go to their odd parts bins and find a rubber or hard plastic plug of the same size.

Finally got under the car last weekend. The heat exchanges will need to be removed.

The airtubes are completely corroded. Started soaking them in WD-40. Pray none snap off when I get around to taking them out! I'll take a couple pictures of the project.

Good luck with this. My smog pump has been removed but the mounting bracket (big ugly Y thing) is still in. Too much trouble to get out said two different mechanics.

It's not THAT big a deal. I took mine out without any issues at all.

This smog pump bracket is a chore to remove. Who can shed some light on this? What bolts are needed to complete the job?

Why is it such a chore? There are three nuts holding it on. Just start pulling it off (along with the valve that is attached to the right of it in your picture - you don't need that anymore either).

When it's gone, you can either use some spacers along with the original nuts/studs, or you can pull out the studs and replace them with bolts. If that's what you want to do, just take the studs to your local hardware store and match them up with the appropriate length/thread bolts.

You're making this a bigger deal than it needs to be. Just start unbolting. The fasteners are sitting right in front of you.

If you do go down the path of removing the tube & injectors, be very careful removing the injectors from the heads. They break off pretty easily. I didn't have any problem removing the tube assembly from the injectors, and the first 3 injectors came out easily (right side of the engine), but 2 of the 3 on the other side broke off, which then required removing the exhaust system in order to drill the bad ones out of the head. And that was after giving them a good overnight soaking w/ penetrating oil. My simple weekend afternoon project turned into a 3 weekend project as a result....

Did you ever finish this project and get the bracket off?

What is the part # for the 6 plugs you ordered from our host? (Post 11)
