Has anyone installed a start button to fire the motor? Any tips or pitfalls I should watch out for. I can't seem to justify the high $$$ for a new ignition switch when I can just add a start button (like the S2000 and many race cars).

I had this done on my 1980 SC several years ago, for the same reason you report. The only downside I noticed is that the starter buttons don't last forever. Plan on an annual replacement to avoid getting stranded. |

Is it electrical or mechanical problem? The electrical portion of the ignition switch is only about $40.

Right. I would again recommend just replacing the plastic switch behind the tumbler cylinder. If that does not work, then go to Plan B.
My '73 Datsun pickup has a toggle switch mounted on the dash for ignition, and a spring loaded button also on the dash to run the starter. I don't have any idea where the key is for this thing. The theft deterrent system I use works on the principle of aesthetics. There are about three square feet of rust holes on the body of that vehicle. ------------------ '83 SC |

My great grandfather had a Datsun pickup of unknown vintage. He would leave the keys in the ignition wherever he went. I asked him wasn't he worried about someone stealing it? His reply "If somebody wants the damn thing, they can have it."
