Problem with Koni shocks

I have a pair of Koni adjustable shocks for the 944. (8040 1035) These are the style where you pull the bump stops then adjust fully collapsed. I have used this style Koni before, but not this part number.

I posted this yesterday in the 944 forum, but I thought I might get more information here.

One is pretty much what I expect - it compresses fairly easily, it's easy to find the adjustment and I found the stop for full soft easily.

The other was very difficult to compress all the way. It feels like I have engaged the adjustment a couple times, but I can't find a stop and it's not obvious like the other one. I have the bump stops out of both.

After a couple times trying to adjust this one it was abruptly soft - for a a couple of compression cycles. Then it stiffened up again. This happened at least twice. Even when soft I didn't seem to be able to engage the adjustment. I also sometimes got a noise at the top of stroke like air passing through, but this wasn't consistent.

Does anyone have insight to what's going on here? Any thoughts on the failure to adjust?

These are used shocks, but they are in very nice shape. Both extend on their own when left sitting.

Sounds like the the seal on the one might be shot. Any visible oil leakage?

Sad part for you as well is that as they are used, no warranty.

No visible leakage and they extend on their own - which makes me think they have gas pressure.

I fooled with the stiff one some more. The first time I compress it, it is normal. After that it is very stiff.

This makes me think that there is a valve that is sticking or an orifice that is clogging. That doesn't explain why I can't engage the adjustment.

They are used but I expect I can return them.

Thanks
