Are my 901 gears worn

I have been told that 3rd and 4th gears in my gearbox (as we call it in the uk) are worn which is why the box whines in 3rd and 4th.

Not sure if the attached photos are good enough to see, but I'd value a second opinion.

Thanks
Graham

A clear pic of both sides of the teeth showing any galling or obvious wear would be good.

Sadly, that's all I have as the gears are currently in service!

Most time, the noise is created by the mesh of the gears, not an individual flaw in one metal surface. You can't see this without a close inspection of the wear patterns on both gear faces.

If the gearbox is noisy, in a single gear(not while shifting), it's a good bet you need to replace the gear set.

Your mechanic told you your gears are worn and then reassembled it with them? Get a new mechanic.

Thanks for that, I wasn't sure that just looking at a single photo would do. On the basis that the gearbox man has inspected closely, I'll carry on with trying to find replacements.

I have never heard of a case of gear whine going away without replacing the gears.

For some reason I thought gear whine was more likely a result of bad bearings, or worn bearing bores causing misalignment?

That is often the upstream cause of the wear. The bad bearing let’s the gear mesh get out of alignment, and wear wrong.
