Yes, I know this flies in the face of the Bruce Anderson Porsche-buying strategy but here's my thoughts:

				1. With my 94 cab I cannot participate in DE's without adding a rollbar which requires cutting up my parcel shelf (no back seat). 2. With my 94 cab, the $/value at stake in the event of a serious crunch at the track is probably $10-$15K higher. 3. With an 88 or 89 Targa (G-50), I have extra $ in my pocket and a car I can take to DE's with lower risk and lower fear of getting a booboo (yes I have young kids). 4. With the Targa I can also enjoy the car as a weekend driver while I burn my bald-spot. . .I like doing that. 5. I enjoy doing much of my own work and the late 80's 911 may be even more conducive for this. 6. I love the cab but really miss the more visceral driving experience that I had in my 87. I'm not looking for approval here but thought it'd be interesting to read your comments. You guys (and gals) always add intresting and suprizing perspective. Thanks, ------------------ Mike 94 C2 cab |

Seems like it'd be hard to go backwards in the HP game...don't know, I've never driven a 964.

3.2s do have meaner styling, and you're less afraid to make mods with spoilers, rear wheel spacers and things (as I have done) because the car is already "older." But you'll still have to pay and pay well for work done (except the plug wires etc will be cheaper! Only need 7) |

There really is an argument for the Targa. I mean, without the top the car really looks very sharp. With the top, there is a bit of a broken-back look from window-to-rollbar-to-top. My heart sits with the look of the coupe, but I love the open air more, and I am very spoiled with the large Webasto sunroofs of the 60's Benzes and so the micro-sunroof on the coupe is a non-starter for me.

Plus the rear window seems non-existent when looking forward, but unlike the Cab., you do have some privacy. Rambling, Jw '78SCTarga |

that is a great looking Targa. May I ask what the ride height is at the front and rear? Wheels are 17"? Regards, Markus |

I love my cab and would never trade for a targa. I think you made some very good points, however, where do you use the car the most often. I use my car on the road 95% of the time and at the track 5%. For me, I wouldn't trade for less enjoyment 95% of the time for more enjoyment 5% of the time. A crazy thought might be to trade your cab for say an 84 cab and use the extra to help pay for an 78sc coupe for the track. With a few mods you could have a 200 HP+ light track car and a cab for the weekends.

Sounds like a good idea. I track my Targa and I don't have any real problems with it. I know a Coupe would be stiffer and faster, but hell - my personal skills on a track are still below what a Targa is capable of so no biggie.

And yeah, I enjoy having the top off myself. I cut off all my hair (halfway down my back when I first got my car) so I could enjoy my Targa. Another option would be to buy a rollbar for the Cab. A lot cheaper. And you can put it on for race weekends take it out when you're done. They just bolt in if you weld in some mounts. I see plenty of guys running rollbars in their Cabs. ------------------ Mark Szabo 1986 911 Targa 3.2 1987 Escort 5-speed 1.9 RIP The Porsche Owners Gallery |

You NEED my '87 Targa. It will run circles around Boxter S and almost hang with 996's. I've done everything you can do to a street car. Besides there is NO difference between '87, '88 & '89. Take a look a my ad in the P-Part Classified section. # 610 Please let me know if you have any questions. I've got the '02 Carrera bug real bad! Tough decision - pretty clean cab you have. Might want to look further into roll bar options - either removable or something that won't require hacking the interior. But. . . if you decide to go 80s the mods can be fun. ------------------ Mike - Atlanta '86 911 3.2 Targa |

Mike, you don't have to cut up your rear parcel shelf to install a rollbar. I just removed mine. It's quite easy. It sits in my garage waiting for re-installation when/if I sell it.
