What's a lightweight flywheel look like?

What's a lightweight flywheel look like?

The guy I bought the car from said mine had one, but I have no idea how to tell, any suggestions?

(First guy who tells me to weigh it gets hate mail )

Well....you could weigh it.....no wait....
Sorry Chris...couldn't help myself.
Seriously....material ...aluminum?
Or...if steel....look for cut out part on back of wheel...(flywheel has been put on lathe and a bunch of material has been removed from the back of the unit).
We used to do this with Volks flywheels....could shave off 5 - 7 lbs easily.
Remember lighter is not necessarily better...a heavier wheel will smooth out the individual pulses in the engine and give slightly better fuel economy(my opinion).

Chris:
I don't know the weights of the different wheels off-hand...I'm sure someone else will chime in with them.
Didn't Porshe make some aluminum wheels?
Or are they for race only?
My thoughts would be in this direction if weight is the main concern.
Also...after-market like Hayes...for a light wheel?

Chris, I had my flywheel lightened then balanced by a local machinist. I also obtained a lightweight pressure plate to use. heres what my flywheel looks like.

Island...don't forget a Harley has 40-50 lb wheels inside....to even out the pulses.
And even then...they are still known as " Milwaukee Vibrators".....LOL
(but the ladies do love 'em)

If you go to the Pelican catalogue page on lightweight FWs, I think it tells the weight, at least of the LW one. Almost certain that the light ones are always aluminum, since a stock 911 FW is pretty darn light as FWs go. The PP is the heavy part, I am going with the Sachs Power Clutch, (alum. PP), on my car.
