Thumbs up 915 Bushings,Swepco= Yaaaaaaaaaah!

Got the bushings in Sat. and had the Swepco in last week. It really does make a difference. After the Swepco oil in tranny it seemed a little smoother but with the bushings in and about a 1/2 hour on the adjustment of the shift coupler it shifts like it's supposed to, mechanical and a little hesitant on the first to second shift.

For all that haven't done the coupler bushings in a while, Do It !
Mine were oblong, the other bushings up front were OK but I replaced them anyway. Thanks to this site and the tech section I was at ease with doing it myself.

Thanks to everyone that contributes to this site!!

Rick

i did the same thing you did several months ago, except without the swepco, just fresh normal tranny oil. i got the same results. IMHO, it is the bushings and the coupler adjustment that make the difference, not the swepco.

i suppose the REAL test of my theory will be when i change my ordinary gear oil for swepco and see if i feel an improvement in shifting above and beyond the improvements i've done already.

Did you purchase a package which included the bushings that you mention or did you just pick and choose? I've got this planned for this winter and am trying to build the list.

As for the Swepco, I've been trying to find a dealer in Canada without any luck. If I get it shipped to Canada the ground UPS charges and Customs fees are more than the product .

Thanks ... Ted

Hey Big Ted.

Try contacting Swepco through their web site and ask them who is the local agent. I can even buy the stuff here in New Zealand. Great service, the chap drops it off at the door. And it made a huge difference to the shifting.

Hey Rick, how hard was it to get the old bushings out? Did you have access to a press? I did the front bushings last weekend, and didn't have time to pull the coupler. But, I've read all the posts about being careful and needing a press to get the pin out. What can you offer here?

liskeard:

i bought them all either off of the Pelican site. you need the shift coupler bushings, the ball cup bushing (at the end of the shifter), and the one in the shifter housing that holds the long rod from the gear shift to tranny. it's been awhile, but it seemed like $30 US for all of them. i ALMOST bought the entire shift coupler package but figured i would save the $60 (coupler was approx. $80) and try to press them in myself.

efhughes3:

i did not have access to a press. it was a little bit of a pain in the b*tt to get them in, but i was patient and got them in without messing them up. so it can be done........

the biggest improvement came in adjusting the shift coupler, and fresh tranny oil as my bushings were not in bad shape.

best $30 i ever spent.

I bought the shifter bushing kit from Pelican, part #PEL-BUSHKIT1. It included 2 coupler bushings, the shifter cup bushing and the shift rod bushing. Around 40 bucks including shipping.

OK, the Swepco web site brags about North American distribution etc, and now I remember, I've gone this route before. I sat on hold for 30 minutes once, gave up and sent an e-mail looking for information. Never any response?

Thanks for the info on which parts to get, now if I could only get some contact from Swepco. I actually talked to the parts guy at the local Porsche dealer, and he gave me the deer in the headlights look when I mentioned Swepco

I e-mailed Swepco and they only sell cases of 6 packs (6 1-gallon jugs). I believe the cost for a 6-pack was around $140. So, if you've got some friends, it's a lot cheaper to buy the 6-pack and split it than it is to buy them one at a time.

Don't forget that if you're having balky shifting and will be changing the trans oil to pull that bottom plate and tighten up the shift fork on the plate. Easily done and, if the fork is loose on the studs, will make all the difference in the world.

Few folks seem to look into this, but it is an easy job that is best done with a swap of the trans oil.

If you don't have a press you can heat the part that the pin slides into with a propane torch to get it to let go of the pin.
