Name that part....

So going from 50 boxes and 76 shell to a road legal car, I had always assumed that this was part of the passengers footboard....until I went to fit it tonight. It is about 18x7", has a 1/4" around three sides, sans one of the long sides and has a very slight curvature from long side to long side. Looked for a part number...nothing. The long side without a lip has a slight wear that is similar to the passengers footboard block lock.....here's where I went wrong in my assumption 7 months ago.

Any clues? I thought maybe some sort of heat shield near the exhaust but nothing looks out of the ordinary and there is already a vented shield there.

Ill be the first to say doesn't look 76 911 to me.

I know Eddie, it's killing me. I've looked throughout the entire PET multiple times. What's weird is that this would be the only thing of dozens of boxes and cans that did not go on the car. Right patina as well. Worse is that I know I've seen it before, but maybe on something else. Evert nut bolt and washer from the torn down 2.7 wax accounted for even. I think some of it ended up with you as a matter of fact....through my shuffle of parts.

I guess I can send the PO a pic and see what he knows as well. Driving me nuts.

Center oil cooler block off? Looks like it could fit in the front of a long hood rs bumper with a center oil cooler.

Like this one that's not cut out: http://www.f-s-h.com/contents/media/tk_1_2.jpg

I guess the part I'm thinking of is called an oil cooler blank.

Here's a few: Fiberglass lightweight parts for Porsche 911 2,8 RSR

PO had no idea. I guess it will go on a shelf.....

Here's my WAG...

Home made/aftermarket "protection" piece for driver's door threshold?
I have seen these on a few 356 and early 911 over the years.
Usually made of stainless, some with engine turning to dress them up etc.

Just covers the short strip of carpeted threshold where many drag their feet getting in/out.

I like that...

I actually wish that would be it...I like the sound of it. But the curve goes the wrong way, the tabbed edges would be outright. Going to take another look around the nose in the trunk.....then I'm done LOL.

Im sure you would have noticed any strange holes but looks like a fabricared access panel cover to me.

Tidybuoy 11-16-2014 11:48 AM

Any chance it could be an exhaust support - something like this:

Saw this on the classifieds this week...

its to big for anything back there Vern. I thought, because of the slight curve that it was a heat shield of some sort. But it doesn't show the right patina for being exposed to direct heat and moisture.

Furthermore, the screw/bolt holes are dimpled. This isn't something I recall finding on any other parts for this car. Flush mounting and curved surface are leading me to believe its an access panel of come sort. Maybe older America firewall. PO had a Jeep CJ5 crawler also. Might have been a take-off from the modification to it that got mixed in.

Might hold onto it for 10-20 years though...just in case. Based on previous experiences, I know how to find out exactly what it is......just get rid of it and wait a couple weeks.

The inner rear bumper shield from 84 and 85 to keep bumper exterior cool.

Wow Bruce best guess yet

That is easily the closest of anything I've found. Curved the wrong way and the bolt holes and flange direction are wrong. If you didn't find it, it's not part of this car....on the shelf it goes (just in case).

Thanks everyone.
