Rear bumper bars on early cars
Hi Folks,
You'll probably see me post frequently since I recenly bought a 912 project car and have limited knowledge of the early cars. It's been a while since I've been involved in the Porsche world. Here are a couple obligatory pics. My question refers to the rear bumper bar mounted to the bumperettes. I can't seem to find a photo of another early 911 / 912 with this kind of bar attached. Seems most do not have anything, or the ones that do have two that stretch top and bottom in between the chrome bumperettes. Any info would be great. I think I prefer the look of the car without the bar, but if this is how the car came from the factory, that is how it will stay. Trying to restore back to as close to as original as possible. Thank you ![]()

That is a factory option bar, as indicated by the single bar and the ends terminating on the face of the bumperettes. Aftermarket bars were double and attached to the inside sides of the bumperettes.

Thanks for the info guys. I figured it was the other way around. Dual bars in between bumperettes was factory and mine was aftermarket. Like I said. I've scoured google for 912 / 911 pictures and the dual setup is the only one I can seem to find. The factory single bar must not have been a popular option.......

amco (ammco?) bars. usually the front had the single bar, which made getting yuor fingers on the safety release difficult. i really like the look of the double rear one. finishes off that bare area nicely.

Yes indeed, Amco was the manufacturer of the bars--single in front, double in back, attached to the inner sides of the uprights as in the pics. IIRC, there was another aftermarket manufacturer as well whose product had the same look as the Amco but each bar attached to the inner sides of the uprights separately, not with a welded tab that used screws.
