assistance from MFI guru in SoCal?
I am looking for someone in SoCal (the closer to San Diego, the better) who is willing to spend a short amount of time with my 72 911T (2.4 MFI) to tell me if my car is acting "normal" at idle. After a fairly large shop bill I am still unhappy with the way the car idles when first started and when fully warmed up, but was told that this is all normal (my expectations are too high).
The car misses and burps and hunts at idle, despite all of my and two shops' attempts to correct it over the past year.

Jeff,
I've just had my MFI pump rebuilt, and it's as smooth -- and even -- at idle as a CIS or EFI 911. Matt Holcomb MFIWDP PRVC BOHICA 1974 911 Carrera 2.7 RoW 1975 Mercedes-Benz 280SE Dedicated Homepage Engine Rebuild Homepage Porsche Owners Gallery Profile Pelican Gallery Profile |

Hello Matt -
How was it before the rebuild? Any difference?

Ok,
I have had a bunch of MFI cars and when they run right they don't hunt or idle poorly. In fact, my current "S" runs so smoothly that you can bearly hear it at idle because it was set at just under 700 rpm wiht a variance of about 50 RPM on a multi dwell/tach meter. It actually got me concerned because my oil pressure was too low at that idle. Don't be mislead by a bad diagnosis. Your car can and should idle smoothly and accelerate well. MFI in general can have problems... bad gaskets, worn throttle bodies and bores, worn out pump, bad adjustments, etc. you can find most of the best information on the Pelican site and it will, if nothing else, make you into a much more educated consumer so when your mechanic gives you a line of BS, you can give him what for. In all honesty, these systems are not as bad as you think and they are much better than later systems in that they are not computerized or overly complicated. People make them complicated, but the truth is Pelican has explained it really well. Take a look, you won't be disappointed. All The Best, Marc |

I was just on a website for a company that rebuilds fuel injection pumps. They brought up a good point about judicious changing of you fuel filter. They suggest it at every oil change. Something for us MFI guys to keep in mind. Your problem could also very likly be a slight contamination of you fuel supply. Have you checked the condition of your tank?
Jeff, my car idled nicely cold or warm with an occasional studder but nothing major. The reason I use the past tense for it is because it had other problems not associated with MFI. Have you checked your injectors? they are a leading cause of a lot of MFI problems. Or EFI for that matter. Also, that place I found on the web has great prices on rebuilds. approx. $650.00 to do a 6-cylinder inline pump. I'll look up the address and post for future reference. The bulk of their business seems to be diesel tractors but they are basically the same design as gasoline MFI. Bobby Last edited by Bobboloo; 10-11-2002 at 11:08 PM.. |

The idle was okay before the rebuild, but not as smooth as it is now. Matt Holcomb MFIWDP PRVC BOHICA 1974 911 Carrera 2.7 RoW 1975 Mercedes-Benz 280SE Dedicated Homepage Engine Rebuild Homepage Porsche Owners Gallery Profile Pelican Gallery Profile |

Dont forget that your ignition system has to be spot on! Your timing has to be correct also. If your vacume retard on your dizzy is not holding vacume or if your vacume lines on your throttle bodys are pluged it will never settle down to a nice smooth idel.

jeff: i'm not a guru, but i've messed with my MFI quite a lot ('73 911e). i'm reasonably happy with how it runs, but it has a few "loose ends", too.
i live in dana point, so i think i meet the distance requirement, if not the expertise requirement. if you are interested in meeting this weekend, email me at tmctguer@cox.net, or rickguerrero@myairmail.com (my pager). |

Also try Dieter at Andial in Costa Mesa. He's not the closest and he won't be the cheapest, but he's an old-school German who knows his shi* with MFI cars. He made my RS run like a swiss watch. Good luck!

if you're looking for a SHOP, as opposed to an individual, you could try hergeshiemer motor sports in lake forest. they've never done MFI work on my car, but the shop owner knows MFI systems. andial would also be a good choice based on their long history with P-cars.

I'm trying to get an honest opinion from an individual, I have been told more than once "this is the best running 72 we've ever seen" and I just don't believe it.
