'69 S oil cooler and thermostat?????

My '69 911S does not currently have an external oil cooler installed and before I track it I want one. Of coarse it originally had a radiator style coolers mounted in the right front fender. The '69 also had hard lines run inside the rocker panel and had the thermostat inside the engine compartment near the oil tank.

I have an external radiator type cooler, but its old, nasty and leaks. So Im going to need a new one. I have the lines for it and the mounting stuff (most of it anyway) like the back guard.

My car also has the hard lines mounted and run. They start from inside the engine bay in front of the oil tank. The ends here actually protrude into the engine bay through holes in the chassis side in front of the oil tank. They end just in front of oil tank crankcase breather. The hard lines run around the rear fender well, down through the rocker panel and back up inside the front fender well. Currently, both ends of the lines are capped with tape.

My problem is I have no idea how the oil cooler and lines will attach to the oil tank? The lines run up high and therefore appear to not attach to any of the lines running from the engine itself. There are no attaching points on the oil tank that I can see for the thermostat to connect to or for the oil lines to connect to?

Where does the thermostat go? I currently dont have one, and will need to buy one if it can be found. I may need aftermarket. However, I have no idea where it would mount or how the oil circulation would go? Is it incorporated into the oil filter housing somehow?

Any clues or help on this is greatly appreciated!

On my '69...the front line coming through the bulkhead goes to the thermostat and then to the oil filter housing or just below it.
The back line goes to the oil filter housing which is connected to the tank.
Sorry...no pics....if you need one I will crank up the camera.

Actually, some pics would be great. I suspected it went to the filter housing as there was no other place. I guess I will need a new filter housing that connects to the tank as mine has no fittings for the lines to connect.

Thanks!

Anyone know where to get the oil filter housing or fittings and if an aftermarket thermostat would work?

Take a look at this External Oil Cooling Configuration Guide.

Look up the '69-'71 solution. It shows the routing of the lines.

Only difference is that yours has the lines inside the body. Anyone retrofitting should put the lines outside the body.

Chuck,

I already looked all over that and printed the schematic for the '69. It is indeed helpful in that it showed the thermostat going in the engine bay. However, it does not show any detail regarding the actual placement of the thermostat and the oil filter carrier.

At this point, I am needing some detail on how the lines attach to the thermostat and the oil filter housing. Im suspecting that I have some parts missing....

Anyhow, your site is really great! I would not have known that my hard lines were routed properly except for the diagrams on your site.

What year thermostat do you have?

I don't have one in front of me to look at, but if memory serves the '69 thermostat is integrated into the oil filter console. It should have two male 26mm threaded fittings for the lines to the front.

Someone please correct me if that is wrong and provide a picture if available.

I dont have the thermostat at all. My car also must have had the oil tank modifed with a later style oil filter adaptor or assembly as mine has no fittings for the attachment of a thermostat or oil hoses. Thus... I have no picture in my mind of how this all actually should go together or what exact parts to hunt.

Anyone with photos and part #'s by any chance?

Unless you are trying to retain originality, I'd suggest you upgrade to the '74-89 style thermostat. It's much easier to get and the plumbing for it is readily available too.

My understanding of the original thermostat is that it was built into the oil filter console, eg. 1 unit. Hence there would no special fittings on your tank.
