early whale tail - how is it held on?
The early turbo tail how they are fastened to the lid?
Do they just fasten to the standard grill holes or do you need to drill into the decklid? Here is the tail I'm taking about

You have to drill into the decklid. There are about 8 holes that you'll have to drill through the lid. At least that is how the tail attached to my decklid on a factory turbo tail.

It makes sense to buy a tail with the decklid it was mounted to, since it ruins the decklid to install one. If you buy a tail only, it makes sense to buy a $50 used decklid and get it painted along with the new tail. That way you can always go back to stock and/or sell the tail separately.

Just to clarify, that CTR tail is 3.2 Carrera, not early Turbo. Early Turbo tails are one-piece fibreglass - these two are of the types variously fitted to early Turbos:

What year is that white tail from?
I know this thread is old, but do you know the year of that white tail in the picture? I have the same tail on my car (not original) and I was told the 2nd skinny grill on the tail was only in 75 for the Carrera turbo and turbo. Thoughts?

Hi Bob, What is the difference between the two tails pictured above? How come the white has skinnier 2nd grill than the red one. On the other hand, I have a replica of an early carrera tail without the 2nd grill. Is it for a non-turbo? So far I have seen 3 variants, the two pictured above and one without a 2nd grill?
Thanks

Large 2nd grill for a/c cars, small for non a/c cars. No second grill tails were standard on 75 Carrera's and 80 Weissach cars and were also on 75- 77 cars optioned with tails.

Actually, I think the tails with the small grilles were used in 1975 and 1976 and the tail with the larger grille was used in 1977.

Lots of confusion over the subject but the larger grill housed the a/c condenser and a/c was standard on US turbo's in 76 so in theory, all 76 US turbo's had the larger grill. https://www.flickr.com/photos/fredsredt/6170496155/

I have one without the extra grill. It's from Carrera 74-77 (not sure about year, probably 75) without A/C.
