Heater questions
 

First, my heater does not seem to be working. I checked in the engine compartment and noticed that the plug for the heater blower was unplugged. I tried plugging the plug in with the engine running and the blower motor made this god-awful sound - it was running, but certainly did not sound right.

OK, I figure I have two options:

1. Pull out the blower and either fix it or replace it. One question - I already tried to pull it out and it doesn't seem to come out without removing the hard fuel lines. Does anyone have experience with this? It seems like it would be easy to damage the lines when removing the end fittings.

2. Backdate the heater. Since I don't really use heat that often, I wouldn't mind doing this. What's involved with doing this? What sort of parts do I need?

The blower doesn't have to be running for the heat to work. It's just there to assist with the airflow at low engine speeds.

So, if you have no heat at all, you should check that the heater flaps are working, and that all the hoses are intact. You'll have to crawl under the car to check the flaps and the hoses from the heat exchanger to heater flaps.

it would be a good idea to go ahead and pull the blower and clean and lub the parts. They tend to get dirty back there. It should come out with out moving any lines, just remove the other colling and it should just come out. if it still has problems running after you finish cleaning, check the heater blower relay in the rear compartment on the left side of the engine. It is the smaller of the two relays.

Not sure on the 81, but with the 87's, this blower comes on when the engine is running for added cooling.
