Old fuel disposal?

Hi,

Just wondering what others do when you need to dispose of some old, nasty varnished fuel... I have a gallon or two of the most putrid smelling stuff left over in the gas tank of a roller that'd been sitting for a while when I bought it. I did the unthinkable a few years ago and poured a small amount (a few cups) out in my yard and it stank for almost a year back there. I don't have any bonfires to set or fields to burn at the moment... Any tips for responsible disposal?

Thanks,
Tom

How about diluting it with fresh gas and run it through an older carburated car? Or befriend an independent car shop and let them mix it in with their old oil that is being picked up by their disposal service.

I used to work in the marine and small engine trade. We would get some old thing in with 5+ year old gas in it. Yes, it stinks and no, it won't burn at all. All the volatiles are gone. So no to mixing with good and trying to use in a carburated vehicle. I second porwolf's idea of mixing it with used oil for recycling. Guy down the road has an old motor home with about 50 gallons in it. Aren't you glad you don't have that much to get rid of!

Not sure if they all do, but my county landfill has "hazardous waste days" where they take all the nasties.

Late at night stick it in a neighbors car that you hate.

Taking it to a shop/garage that burns waste oil would be a good way to go. Many dealerships still use these, too. No need to pre-mix with old motor oil; they will have plenty of that in their tank already.

In todays environment all local governments will have a Hazardous waste disposal program, I doubt they will tell you to flush it down the storm drain.

I bring mine to a friend who has a waste oil burner. He mixes it in with the waste oil.

I did this and ended up ruining a perfectly good lawn mower.

We have a hazardous waste cleanup day around here, twice a year.

Truth.

I used to think nothing of burning old nasty gas in my carbureted vehicles until the last time i ran my IH scout on some. It stuck the valves and bent my pushrods.

I would call your local recycling center.

Don't pour it in the water running down the street in front of your parent's house and lite it. Don't ask me why I know this.
