Leaking Oil Tank

Thought that the S hose on my 73.5 was leaking. Upon further inspection it appears that the oil tanking is leaking on the bottom seam.

Our host indicates that the tanks re no longer for sale new.

Is is possible to rebuild the tank to fix the leak, or am i better off buying a used one?

THANKS

I don't recall but aren't the tanks brass? If so, take it to someone who can silver solder and have them fix it.

Rust, rust, rust!! Unless it just has cracked at the plug, that can be soldered.

Oil tanks are cheap compared to engine rebuilds. A user SC tank, which often is some sort of stainless could be an option.

Oil tanks of that vintage were steel with a copper plating to help prevent rust. They usually can be repaired by thorough cleaning & then brazing or soldering.

The leaks most often come from up top, with holes coming thru from the inside where oil vapors reside. These vapors are actually mild acids formed from the combustion process. They perforate the top of the tank above the oil level.

Don't know if a later tank would fit the 73.5 model, but later tanks (80's) are SS and will last "forever", comparatively speaking.

The one best resource to fix that tank properly has the name "Coast" if I remember correctly. Located in sunny California, of course. Do a search for "Oil Tank Repair" or a fellow Pelican will see this & reply with the answer.

get in touch with Pacific Oil Cooler in CA, they do a fantastic job on vintage Pcar oil tanks and very reasonable. They just restored my 71 tank and it is artwork.
