Price is right (right now), but that missing ring will be very difficult to find...

are you saing that 99.00 is a fair price for a pair of H1's???
please don't tell me that is true...I paid about the "buy it now" price for a set of slightly worn ones... are the rings that hard to find...I know the one I am getting has a ring with some small dings... |

Sorry to ask a dumb question, but what is the advantage of H1s?

Well, it looks like Wayne got one H1 assembly and some spare parts ...
The 'ring' and retaining clips could be replaced by a VW Beetle part with a few metallurgical modifications, but the four adjusters semi-permanently attached to the ring would be hard to fabricate from scratch! The paintable trim rings can cover up a lot of shame on the chrome rings! Sam ... have you tried replating the old reflectors with chrome?

Hey Sam-
Since you mentioned you've mucked around with H1s a bit, have you ever replaced the old and cracked little rubber pivot bits? Mine are in sad shape, and are preventing me from getting the lights aligned really well. Any ideas?

Chris,
Cut a 3/8" long piece of old 8 mm or 8.5 mm silicone ignition wire ... pull out the wire core ... run a tapered reamer in the middle to 'loosen' it up a bit, then slip it into place, and put the adjuster 'tit' into the newly fitted piece, and get with the adjusting! A bit of moly CV grease on the adjuster threads & sliding metal surfaces of the bucket will help in the long run, too!

can you guys look at these(different auction then the one I posted)
these are what I bought...1 PAIR OF H1...I expect them to ship out to me any day...I will take better pics when I get them...295.00 MJ this is what the owner said: These H1 lights are generally sound (have not been hit or dropped, etc.), but need cleaning up (inside and out) and attention (going over and adjusting). The lenses are good but need new rubber seals around each of them (available and the same as H4 seals), one bulb is missing but I suspect all bulbs need replacing (standard items), the trim rings have some small dents and some scratches (could use the outer trim rings that are frequently used to cover these), and one of the lights needs a philips-head adjustment screw at the end of its cable (as standard screws were used, one of these should be available at a good hardware store). I have two other H1 sets (one on ebay) and don't have time to do another. I doubt you will ever see a price this low again! Thanks for your interest! PS Sam: Maybe if my reflectors need refurbing I can throw them in with your $500 minimum deal...would this work for front and rear turn signal asemblies too? I mean are they done by the same process?? I have a set of rear and looking for a set of fronts for my chassis Last edited by 82SC; 10-02-2002 at 02:59 PM.. |

So to clarify. They may be slightly brighter than H4s on full beam. A trained eye can pick the difference at 10ft.
I personally don't care and given the price differential would gladly swap a perfect set of chrome H4s for my average H1s (one of the trim rings is cracked and they have H4 lenses). But I'm in New Zealand, so I just have to stick with what I have.

MJ,
Those H1's look pretty corroded on the back side ... so I suspect a very serious effort at cleaning up the adjusters will be needed! As for the repair of the long adjuster with 'a regular' screw ... forget it! An extra-long M5 countersunk screw will need to be brazed to the spiral spring/cable assembly, and a special source of metric hardware, such as Metric & Multistandard will have to be the source! It looks like you have some serious work ahead before those H1's will be serviceable! The seller was a bit less than candid about their real condition!

another one bites the dust...
well I guess it will be a learning experience...can't say that I am too happy, but then again can't bring myself to pay 600 for a pair of lights no matter how nice they are...plus I've got about 6months before the chassis is ready to have light put on... I'll keep you guys updated and it looks like we have somewhat of a H1 expert restorer in Sam... I will post pics when I get them and we can guess as to what their real value is so that the knife already deep in my gut can be twisted and slashed around to make my pain and sorrow even deeper and greater then it already is... You did alright!
Actually, if both lights come with the transaction, I think you did very well. I'm not sure both lights came - I read the thread pretty quickly - it'll just take some attention to detail to get them cleaned up and mounted properly. On ebay and rennlist, I've seen tons of rings for sale. Not as many H4 lights, and H1s - forget about it. But tons of rings!
Good luck. Tell us how it comes out.

MJ,
That sounds a LOT like the old Billie Sol Estes scam from 40 years ago ... selling fertlizer tanks that don't exist! I wonder what the guy will do if a Rennlist buyer tries to conclude a deal ... just before the eBay auction ends???

I didn't buy them - just bid on the parts. For $100, it seems like a good deal to me. Especially for someone like me - I see boxes of parts and junk all the time.
I didn't buy them for $250 - just bid on them. I understand the work needed... -Wayne

well got my H1's today...and yup they are POS.
Well let me rephrase that...one is a POS...the other is near perfect...the reflectors are clean, screws all intact and operational...the other sucks I guess I am pissed, but not really too...my fault...I've been pretty naive about being a buyer because I've had good luck and I've sometime run across great deals!!! But I think retoring these will pose some challenges and be fun...that is half the fun...problem solving etc... well I will post some pics once I get everything dissassembled...but so far, one light, the screw for the high beam is broken, the reflectors are in pretty bad shape, some of the adjustment screws are completely stripped...the usual problems...rings are scratched but only one real dent... but they do look much cooler then H4's well this will be another project...will keep you updated. I wrote the seller, and tried to be polite since I am partially to blame for not being more patient and more inquizitive... oh well...learn from experience...market value for perfect ones are 600, I paid 300...I got a perfect light on one side so I guess it is okay....we'll see MJ Last edited by 82SC; 10-10-2002 at 03:12 AM.. |

82SC, do you want me to post some better photos of my chromed reflectors? Reading this I now appreciate that a chroming process was not the original method (thanks swbsam), but the result I achieved would have to be 95%. I now have mirror finishes on all four reflectors... isn't that what one is trying to achieve?
Cheers
