Ballist Resistor needed ?
When installing the Pertronix Ignitor Pointless unit with MSD Ignition and MSD Blaster coil do I need to add a ballist resistor?
I also have a Pertronix coil but in the instructions it say's not to use this coil with a HE ignition. Any help is greatly appreciated! -Two Oh |

I think the MSD instructions (I have a 6AL) mention that you don't need a ballast resistor. If you don't have them check on the website in the downloads section. www.msdignition.com
(edit) I went and checked. It dowsn't matter whether you leave it connected - the MSD has its own dedicated power feed (most people go to the starter) and presumably only uses the switched 12v (ie with or without a ballast resistor) to turn the unit on. Make sure you connect up the Pertronix as per the other thread started today (black to MSD white wire, red to switched 12v). Pertronix and MSD both have hookup diagrams on their websites. I had the MSD High Vibration Coil recommended to me because it can be mounted in the standard Porsche position (on the fan housing). Other MSD coils don't like being upside-down, apparently. It has an ugly-ass sticker on it but is a nice plain black underneath. Send back the Pertronix coil - the MSD one is cheap and I can assure you it works. To answer the questions in your other thread, capacitive discharge igntions have (I think) capacitors inside to hold the charge for the coil so the coil doesn't run into saturation problems at high revs (I think - this is from memory but I did no more than read the tech section at the MSD site, plus my understanding of electronics is rudimentary). The MSD has the extra benefit that below 3000rpm it delivers more than one spark (see the web site). This means you get a better burn of the mixture at low revs (ie a carbed 911 won't foul its plugs). MSD is also much newer than the old Bosch CDI and they claim you can open up the plug gaps to 0.050" (huuuuge gap) for extra power. HE ignition - not sure.
