Flywheel/Pressure Plate questions

Question regarding the flywheel on my 81 SC. Is there supposed to be a step on the flywheel or is the surface flush all the way across? I see a small groove where the outer edge of the disc sits, but my machinist is wondering if the surface that the pressure plate bolts to is supposed to be flush with the surface that the disc rides on.
Also wondering what the depth is supposed to be on the pressure plate (see attached photo), as we are tempted to shave a little off the surface that bolts to the flywheel to increase the clamping force slightly.
Thanks.
