Maybe he didn't know what lugging was and read that he shouldn't do it.
Keep the rpm's up so that the motor isn't straining at low rpms...or downshift to produce the same higher rpm. Lugging is driving at too low an rpm putting strain on and increasing engine temp simultaneously.
