Found 10HP Today. Free!

No Cool Collar, Tornado, or K&N Filters, just a dip in ambient air temperatures to the high 30's. I guess we all know that denser air produces more power, but has there ever been a definitive study done to determine the percentage power increase? My seat-of-the-pants test says a +5% increase. Is that realistic? -- Curt

Ask a pilot. Not only the engine, but the propellors and wings also perform better in cold temps. Very dramatic difference.

From my kart racing days several years ago I remember that Hp increase to be about 1.5% for every 10 degree reduction in ambient temp.

yup, it can be a nightmare for a drag-racer, car makes more power which is harder to apply to a colder track. It's even more fun when time-trials are before dark and racing starts after dark. One thing to keep in mind though, if your power increase is too dramatic, your mixture might have been set too rich. I have a short commute to work and on my winter beater truck I run 1 jet size richer for smoother driving since it barely warms up on my 4 mile trip each morning, if I forget to change back in the summer it'll lightly foul the plugs when the temps reach 85 or higher.

I am a competitive cyclist and i can tell you it is the same with HP (human power) and aerodynamics with air density and temp.

Played tennis today. Cool out. My serve was at least 10% faster.
Harder to tell with my 911.

This may be an issue for me. I have a very black sooty tailpipe. In warm weather I notice a bit of smoke on full acceleration. In cold weather, there's no smoke but tremendous power. -- Curt

Outwith any real Hp gains, there is no doubt that on cold days my cars throttle response is amazing! Remember this thread?!

Snake oil! I won't believe it until I see dyno runs...

It's only a shame that good soft compound Z rated tires don't work worth beans below 75F...

When I go to the track in my VW I can usually expect a 2-3 tenth difference in my E.T. if the temp drops 20 degrees during the afternoon. Thats a lot of HP

With a turbo and intercooler... cooler temps equal much more horsepower.

Compared to a 100 F. day when the intercooler is heat-soaked, a crisp day with 40 F. temps and a cold intercooler.... watch out!

So it would seem that all the people that keep their car in for the winter are missing out.
