Clutch help please - 70-71 911T
My 1971 911T came to me as an engine and transmission-less shell and I am doing a nuts'n'bolts rebuild. I have now acquired a good 911 magnesium 5 speed transmission and now need to buy a new clutch kit and the question of which kit do I need for my 1971T is confusing the hell out of me.
Various Sachs vendors offer various suggestions on kit in response to a 1971T search, ranging from well over $1,000 to just over $358, with our sponsor being at the higher end at $872. I have read that the 1970-71 uses a central pull setup in which the pressure plate is pulled away from the flywheel, but I have not been able to find an explanation of how this works or what impact it has on the clutch kit needed. If I search for a clutch kit, suggestions range from the Sachs KF200-03 (which is most often recommended), the Sachs WD 150 43009 355, (most expensive) and the Sachs 3000 509 001 kit (least expensive). But they cannot all be right. As I am in Australia, returns if wrong are costly and time consuming so I would like to get it right first time, if possible. Can someone please give me some guidance as to what is actually needed for a 70-71 911T, and what is most suitable for quiet urban driving only. I don't won't to waste money on this if I can avoid it.

You need the Sachs KF200-03. Here is the Sachs catalog...
![]() ![]() You are correct that the clutch release fork pulls the pressure plate from the disc. A search will find endless discussions how this works. BTW, If you replace the pressure plate bolts as recommended pay attention to the height of the new bolt heads. The new ones I purchased were slightly taller than original and would hit some bosses on the transmission housing. A little grinding on the bosses fixed the problem.

jedward,
I read 70-71 posts with interest cause of my 71T. I am not an expert, but am trying to soak up as much info as I can. I will be in your position shortly (need a clutch kit). Ist thing is you did not say what type of transmission you purchased (only magnesium case). From what I've read, both the 901 and the 915 transmissions had magnesium cases until about 78/79 and they definitely take different clutch kits. I would provide the transmission numbers that are stamped on the case for the experts. I believe the 901 transmissions are 911/00 or 911/01 (also some 905/20), The 915 transmissions are 915/xx. Also, again for the experts, what engine are you mounting it to. Good luck, I am interested in the responses. Bob |

Hi Bob,
The 70 and 71's used the 911/01 dog-leg 5 speed close ratio transmission that was initially developed for 917 race cars. This terms of evolution, this sat between the 901 and 915 transmissions. Mine will mate a "D" series T running a factory 2.2 motor. Hope this helps.
